Sinossi

This anthology, "The Fourth Book of Virgil's Aeneid and the Ninth Book of Voltaire's Henriad," offers an intriguing juxtaposition of classical and Enlightenment literature. At its core, the collection examines themes of heroism, human emotion, and the tumult of historical destiny. Both Virgil and Voltaire present powerful narratives that intertwine personal and political struggles, illustrating the timeless nature of these motifs. The selection draws attention to the stylistic evolution from the epic grandeur of Virgil's Latin hexameters to the Enlightenment wit of Voltaire's French verse, providing a rich tapestry of literary artistry across time. The intertwined backgrounds of these towering figures present a cross-temporal dialogue, with Virgil, a crucial figure of Roman poetry, providing insight into early Western literary traditions, while Voltaire, a central thinker of the Western Enlightenment, critiques and builds upon these traditions. Their works collectively capture the ethos of their respective eras—Virgil's reflections on imperial Rome and Voltaire's commentary on monarchical France. This anthology enriches the reader's understanding of the cultural and philosophical dialogues between antiquity's epic narratives and the Enlightenment's reformative ethos. Readers are invited to explore this collection as a remarkable opportunity to traverse epochs through literature. This anthology is not only an educational journey into the hearts of two literary giants but also an exploration of persistent human questions and the art of storytelling across centuries. It offers a singular volume where the majesty of Rome meets the reason of Enlightenment, fostering a dialogue between different epochs that continue to influence modern thought.

Kenichi Zenimura – known as “Zeni” – loved baseball. As a young man in the 1920s he developed a Nisei baseball league in Fresno, California, and later organized barnstorming tours that brought the likes of Babe Ruth to the West Coast and Japan. And despite being sent to a Japanese-American internment camp in Arizona during World War II, he knew that somehow, baseball would be the key to improving the lives of his fellow detainees.

Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another. Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us.

Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy.

In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades.

The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy.

Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art. Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.

In this volume we have collected verse from poets born in one of the most famous cities in the World: New York. Within its five boroughs are a small universe of wonder and magic, a kaleidoscope of almost everything the planet has to offer. In past times New York was a gateway to a new land and a new future whatever the misery and tragedy of your former life. Of course, this golden vision was not attained by everyone. But our local poets, including such luminaries as Emma Lazarus, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, Alice Duer Miller, and Alan Seeger bring vision and truth to this unrivalled city and its hallowed status in the world of verse

Riders to the Sea: A mother and her daughters are dealing with a familial curse that seems to cause all of the men in the family to die. Anxieties come to a peak when the last, remaining son is getting ready to ride out to sea in order to try and provide for his family.
Shadow of the Glen: A contemplative Drama in One Act about how a women's integrity can be unjustly scrutinized through hearsay and speculation, and how forcing those opinions out into the open can have disastrous consequences for everyone involved.
The Tinker's Wedding: A story of two young tinkers trying to con a travelling holy man into marrying them, all while their mother is constantly trying to satiate her indomitable thirst for drink, thereby inadvertently causing more problems than the drink is worth. Blaming, miscommunication, and utter tomfoolery ensues, leading to the final culmination of each party getting ready to pounce on each other's necks and outrageously strangle each other Saturday-morning-cartoon style.
The Well of the Saints: A blind couple regains their sight only to realize they hate the look of one another. Hilarity and pigheadedness ensues.
Deirdre, a woman of immeasurable beauty, is betrothed/condemned to the King of Ulster, Conchubar. But in true mythological fashion, there is a prophecy which prevents this--. Loyalty, familial ties, and unadulterated love will be strained and broken, with only one question remaining: Who will be left to admire the beauty and sorrow of life?
Playboy of the Western World: A young traveler has come from out of town boasting that he's committed patricide, which, rather than ostracizing him, causes many women of the town to become morbidly curious about this young man, including the prettiest girl in town and the quite newly vivacious widow. But what happens when the supposedly dead father shows up in town to whoop his son into submission?
