Sinossi

Featuring over 60 maps of London from the twentieth century, this fascinating miscellany provides an enthralling exploration of the history of the city.
One of the best ways to gain an insight into a city's multilayered past is by deciphering its maps, and this curated collection of historical maps of London will help you do just that. Many of these hugely interesting and significant maps are also beautiful works of art and fascinating examples of design in and of themselves.
The majority of the maps in this collection have been drawn from the historical treasure house that is The London Archives, which has been housing London's records since 1889. The maps are presented in thematic chapters, including:
• Making Connections: Maps of the railways, tube system and roads.

• Let's Go Outside: London's green spaces and the River Thames.

• Picture This: Pictorial, decorative and artistic maps.

The Most Human Right - Why Free...

What are human rights? Are they laid out definitively in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights or the US Bill of Rights? Are they items on a checklist—dignity, justice, progress, standard of living, health care, housing? In
The Most Human Right, Eric Heinze explains why global human rights systems have failed. International organizations constantly report on how governments manage human goods, such as fair trials, humane conditions of detention, health
care, or housing. But to appease autocratic regimes, experts have ignored the primacy of free speech. Heinze argues that goods become rights only when citizens can claim them publicly and fearlessly: free speech is the fundamental
right, without which the very concept of a “right” makes no sense.

Heinze argues that throughout history countless systems of justice have promised human goods. What, then, makes human rights different? What must human rights have that other systems have lacked? Heinze revisits the origins of the
concept, exploring what it means for a nation to protect human rights, and what a citizen needs in order to pursue them. He explains how free speech distinguishes human rights from other ideas about justice, past and present.

    Awkwardness - A Theory

Awkwardness offers an account of the psychology and philosophical significance of a ubiquitous social phenomenon. Our aversion to awkwardness mirrors our desire for inclusion. This explains its power to influence and silence us: as social creatures, we don't want to mark ourselves as outsiders. As a result, our fear of awkwardness inhibits critique and conversation, acting as an impediment to moral and social progress. Even the act of describing people as "awkward" exacerbates existing inequities, by consigning them to a social status that gives them less access to the social goods (knowledge, confidence, social esteem) needed to navigate potentially awkward situations.

Awkwardness discusses how we ostracize and punish those who fail to fit into existing social categories; how we all depend on—and are limited by—social scripts and norms for guidance; and how these norms frequently let us down when we need them. But awkwardness has a positive side: it can highlight opportunities for moral and social improvement, by revealing areas where our social norms and scripts fail to meet our needs or have yet to catch up with changing social and moral realities. Awkwardness ultimately underscores the conflict between our moral motivations and our desire for social approval and conformity.

In Consequences: The Rise of a Fractured World Order, William Priest, David Roche, and Alex Michailoff deliver an engaging, timely, and insightful analysis of identifying the sources and challenges facing liberal democracies and their ability to confront autocracies and autocratic behavior. The authors identify and address structural flaws present in both democracies and autocracies.

The book explains why the creation and distribution of wealth matters in creating nations where democracy can flourish, and the populace at large can win. Strategies for the creation of wealth (broadly defined) and its equitable distribution combined with the democratic tools that voters, investors, and citizens have available make it more likely those strategies can be deployed. You'll also find:
Detailed and accurate discussions of the end of the liberal world order, post-cold war historical shifts, and the challenges that lie ahead.Explorations of the threat to democracy posed by populist politics and philosophies. An analysis of the likelihood of contemporary political actors to reform our economics and politics, and the steps we can take if they fail to do so.
