Sinossi

In 'The Magic of the Middle Ages', Viktor Rydberg presents a compelling exploration of medieval occult practices and beliefs. Delving into the historical roots, Rydberg's meticulous approach dissects the Cosmic Mythology that underpinned the period's world view, and elaborates on the multifaceted dimensions of magic as perceived by the Church, the learned classes, and the general populace. His illuminating prose not only chronicles the intricate tapestry of medieval thought but also situates these esoteric traditions within the broader context of European history. Skillfully blending analytical rigour with a narrative style, the book contributes a nuanced perspective to the often misunderstood sagas of medieval mysticism.

Viktor Rydberg, a luminary in the study of European culture and history, transposes his extensive knowledge and scholarly insights into 'The Magic of the Middle Ages'. His passion for delving into the past is rooted in a keen understanding of how historical beliefs and practices have shaped modern thought. The depth of his exploration is informed by a belief in the importance of comprehending the cultural and intellectual currents that have influenced contemporary worldviews, making his work a vital resource for both historical scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Readers with an interest in the history of the occult, medieval studies, or the evolution of religious and philosophical thought will find 'The Magic of the Middle Ages' to be a treasure trove of information and analysis. Rydberg's commitment to scholarly excellence makes this work a critical addition to the field, offering a thoughtful examination that challenges and enlightens. This book comes highly recommended for those who seek to grasp the complexities of medieval magic and its enduring legacies in western culture.

A provocative new perspective on presidential power.

Border walls, school bathrooms, student loans, gun control, diversity, abortion, climate change—today, nothing seems out of reach for the president's pen. But after all the press releases, ceremonies, and speeches, shockingly little gets done. The American presidency promises to solve America's problems, but presidents' unilateral solutions are often weak, even empty.

Kenneth Lowande argues this is no accident. The US political system is not set up to allow presidents to solve major policy problems, yet it lays these problems at their doorstep, and there is no other elected official better positioned to attract attention by appearing to govern. Like any politician, presidents are strategic actors who seek symbolic wins. They pursue executive actions, even when they know that these will fail, because doing so allows them to put on a compelling show for key constituencies. But these empty presidential actions are not without their costs: they divert energy from effective government—and, over time, undermine public trust. Drawing on thousands of executive actions, news coverage, interviews, and presidential archives, False Front shows that the real root of presidential power is in what presidents can get away with not doing.

The Pacific Theater of World War II was the culmination of decades of tension, territorial disputes, and ideological differences between Japan and the Allied Powers, particularly the United States. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to Japan’s rise as an imperial power in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Seeking to expand its influence across East Asia and the Pacific, Japan embarked on a campaign of military conquest and economic domination, often at the expense of its neighbors.

By the 1930s, Japan’s aggressive expansionist policies became more pronounced, beginning with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and escalating with the full-scale war against China in 1937. These actions alarmed Western powers, who viewed Japan’s ambitions as a direct challenge to their interests in the region. The United States, in particular, responded by imposing economic sanctions and cutting off vital supplies, including oil, to curtail Japan’s militarism. However, these measures only further inflamed tensions, as Japan viewed them as an existential threat to its survival and growth as a global power.

The turning point came on December 7, 1941, with Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This audacious assault on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii aimed to neutralize American naval power and secure Japan’s dominance in the Pacific. Although the attack achieved significant tactical success, crippling much of the U.S. fleet, it also galvanized American public opinion and led to the United States’ entry into World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of a brutal and protracted conflict that would span nearly four years and claim millions of lives.
