Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin was born on 14th February 1855 in what is now Dnipro in the Ukraine, but then part of the Russian Empire.

After attending secondary school he studied at the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute.

Wars between and on behalf of Empires were a regular feature of the decades then. Garshin volunteered to serve in the Russian army at the beginning of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.

He began as a private in the Balkans campaign and was wounded in action. By the end of the war, in 1878, he had been promoted to officer rank.

By now Garshin, having previously published some articles and reviews in newspapers, wished to devote himself to a literary career. The decision made he resigned his army commission.

His time as a soldier provided rich experiences for his early stories. His first ‘Four Days’ was related as the interior monologue of a wounded soldier left for dead on the battlefield for four days, face to face with the corpse of a Turkish soldier he had killed, gained him early admiration as an author of note.

He wrote perhaps only 20 stories, but their influence was immense, although in these more modern times he is barely remembered and lives in the more prolific shadows of others. His characters are superbly worked into stories that come alive in the intensity and reality of his prose.

Garshin’s most well-known story is ‘The Red Flower’, also known as ‘Scarlet Blossom’ and is easily amongst the first rank of stories dealing with mental health issues.

Despite early literary success, he himself experienced periodical bouts of mental illness.

In one such bout Garshin attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself down the stone stairs leading into his apartment building. Although not immediately fatal, Vsevolod Garshin died as a result of his injuries in a St Petersburg hospital on 5th April 1888. He was 33.

In this captivating story a man is placed into an insane asylum. Life may be grim within its walls but he has a plan to remove evil from the world. All it takes is further sacrifice from himself.

Bom Bom - A Wacky Hippie Trail...

Bom Bom - A Wacky Hippie Trail Adventure is a coming of age road trip punctuated by the music and politics of the seventies. A story of youthful hedonism, love, self-discovery and wild adventures through amazing landscapes that only a few were brave or stupid enough to embrace.
"In the 1960s and 1970s tens of thousands of young Australians headed overseas on “the big adventure”. Some ended up in “Kangaroo Valley” in London drinking vast quantities of Fosters and being immortalised by Barry Humphries in the form of the innocent abroad, Bazza McKenzie. Others took various hippie trails and, although they little knew what they were doing, went on a complex journey of self-discovery.
So why have we never had a really good account of these wild adventures which, with a bit of luck, were always stories about sex and drugs and rock’n’roll. I suspect the problem was Hunter S. Thompson. When someone writes a book like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the bar is set so high … and imitation is a fatal flaw. This omission has now been corrected.
In “Bom Bom” Mark Tesoriero has written the best, and most fascinating, account of a remarkable adventure and a remarkable life. Here, told in an easy conversational style without pretension and without any attempt at “gonzo” style writing, is the story of a young Sydney man who headed out with a friend to experience the hippie trail. It is a story of friendships made; of loves and dalliances along the way; and of adventures in the eternal quest for good drugs and lots of fun.
Don’t underestimate it: this is an important book. It is a slice of life, experienced with great joy and intensity, which many experienced but very few have written about with such clear-eyed honesty. Mark Tesoriero makes a mockery of that old cliché that “If you remember the ‘60s, you weren’t really there”. He remembers everything … and he definitely was there." Bruce Elder

A gripping true story of wartime espionage.

Dundee, 1937. When housewife Mary Curran became suspicious of hairdresser Jessie Jordan's frequent trips to Nazi Germany, she had no idea that she was about to be drawn into an international web of espionage. Thanks to a tip off from Mary, MI5 and the FBI launched major spy hunts on both sides of the Atlantic.

This is the true story of a decade-long series of Nazi espionage plots in Britain, Europe, and the United States. It shows how a Nazi spy's letter, posted in New York and intercepted in Scotland, broke spy rings across Europe and North America. And it reveals, for the first time, how that letter marked the genesis of an intelligence and security alliance that today includes the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

All these years later, the question remains: why?Who would wish to kill this respectable husband and family man in such a brutal fashion? Was it simply a tragic case of mistaken identity, or did someone have reason to end Alistair's life? And what was the significance of the envelope handed to him before he was fatally wounded?Over the years, lines of enquiry have been investigated and dismissed, gossip has spread, theories offered and rumours debated at length. And yet, so long after Alistair's death, no arrest has ever been made and precious few motives have been made public. In this gripping true crime investigation, Peter Bleksley, top ex-undercover cop and The Chief on Channel 4's Hunted, strives to uncover the truth and hunt down Alistair's killer. He travels to Scotland, speaks to experts, and draws on his decades of investigative experience in order to provide new insight into Scotland's most mysterious murder case.
