  Unlike the war in Iraq which had entered its last stage, the war in Afghanistan appears to have several open ends. The security situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated greatly and no comprehensive political outcome has yet arrived. By early 2009, several members of Congress, the officials of the administration and the outside experts had concluded that the efforts known as the America’s “other war” required great national attention. In the inaugural address speech, the US President Barrack Obama had stated that the United States would forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan.  
  For the Afghanistan government, the war was an existential struggle for survival against the Taliban and other insurgents as well as the long-term efforts for the establishment of sustainable security and great stability. For the US government, the war in Afghanistan was concerned about the security of both Afghanistan and the surrounding regions. The concern also included the denial of the safe heaven to the terrorists and in ensuring the stable and constructive regional security balance. For the regional states which included Russia and India as well as the immediate neighbors of Afghanistan including Pakistan and Iran, the war in Afghanistan is critical as it can have a powerful impact on the future security and the balance of influence and power in the region. For the individual members of the NATO Alliance, the war might be the combination of defeating the terrorist networks, proving themselves as efficient NATO members, ensuring the regional stability and demonstrating the relevance of the Alliance of the security challenges of the 21st century.  
  Looking ahead, the United States government faces several operational and strategic decisions about the further engagement of Afghanistan in war. Some of the decisions include: 
  Clarification of the national interests of the United States in Afghanistan and the surrounding regions. 
  The definition of the clear strategic objectives which are based on the specified national interests. 
  The determination of the military, economic and diplomatic approaches which need to be adopted and what resources are committed to supporting the various kinds of approaches. 
  The prioritization of the war in Afghanistan war in comparison to the imperatives of the national securities which would include the war in Iraq and the preparation to meet the potential threats.  
  The helping of the marshal in a coordinated application of the international efforts.  
  The United States has argued over the security of Afghanistan since decades. As the world is working on building the national security in Afghanistan and the neighboring areas along with the local defense forces, there is still a great need to redouble the efforts at building up and strengthening the Afghan human capital and the proper institution of governance that would be able to stand up on its own one day as an effective and independent government.

  Gods, Shadows, and the Birth of Consciousness 
  The evolution of the human mind begins not in pure reason, but in the womb of myth. Long before philosophy or science emerged, myths, rituals, and beliefs shaped cognition, guided behavior, and structured societies. They were not arbitrary stories or empty superstitions—they were the scaffolds of intellect, morality, and power. 
  In ancient civilizations, myths and religious beliefs were strategic tools of governance. They embedded moral frameworks and the fear of deferred punishment—what we might call “cosmic accountability”—into the human psyche, compelling obedience even when no human eyes were present. Gods, spirits, and supernatural forces became invisible regulators, ensuring that the individual conformed to communal norms. This psychological architecture allowed rulers to extend influence without constant coercion. 
  The shamans, magicians, and diviners of early societies were far more than ceremonial figures. They interpreted omens, performed sacred rites, and acted as intermediaries between the visible and invisible worlds. Their symbolic authority legitimized the rule of kings, emperors, and priesthoods, allowing central powers to consolidate control over expansive territories. Through this invisible network of myth, ritual, and belief, early states unified diverse populations, stabilized social order, and extended influence across mountains, rivers, and deserts. 
  This interplay between belief and governance is not confined to the distant past. Modern states continue to rely on narratives, ideologies, and moral frameworks to structure society and legitimize authority.   Kalidasa’s Meghadhuta - With a...

  The Meghadhuta also known as Meghasandesam is one of the beautiful works of Kalidasa. It is a poem in Sanskrit Language consisting of 117 verses. It is actually one of a few minor compositions of Kalidasa. Being one of the greatest poets of Sanskrit Literature, he has produced epics like the Raghuvamsa Mahakavya and Kumarasambhavam and dramas like Abigyana Sakuntalam. 
  The ideas contained in this poem is simple but romantic. Alaka is a mountain in the Himalayas. The god of wealth, Kubera is the king of this place. He has a group of divine attendants working for him. These attendants are known as Yakshas. One of these Yakshas was very much smitten and obsessed with his wife. Hence, he ignored his duties. Kubera, therefore, cursed him and banished him into the woods on planet Earth. The Yaksha came to a mountainous place called Ramagiri named after Lord Rama near the present state of Chattisgarh in India and was residing in an ashram there. 
  The Yaksha spent several months on the mountain. Thoroughly dejected, the love-lorn Yaksha keeps thinking about his wife. His wife also keeps thinking about him all day and all night. It is the time of monsoon. The Yaksha sees a rain cloud passing by. He requests the cloud to carry a message to his wife. The Yaksha then starts to describe the route that the cloud should take to meet his lover. This forms the crux of the verses of this poem. 
  The works of Kalidasa are synonymous with the beauty of nature, lyrical poetry, dramatic stories, great heroes and sensuous heroines. The Meghadhuta focusses mainly on sensual love and the beauty of nature. Kalidasa’s genius lies in making these two subjects flow into each other in this work. For example, Kalidasa picturises the rivers as sensuous women, and he advises his friend namely the cloud to take interest in the rivers along the way on his journey from the plains to Alaka.
