Alexander Kuprin was born in Narovchat, Penza in Russia on 7th September 1870.
At 3 his Father died and he and mother moved to Moscow. By 10 he was enrolled at the Second Moscow Military High School and there his interest in literature began. The Alexander Military Academy followed and two years later he was a sub-lieutenant and posted to an Infantry Regiment for a further four years.
Despite his duties he was a now a keen writer and published his first short story at this time. His military duties also garnered him experiences for his breakthrough work ‘The Duel’. Leaving the military he left for Kiev to work for local newspapers. He continued to publish both stories and novels and by 1901 he was in St Petersburg becoming part of a group that included Chekhov, Ivan Bunin, Maxim Gorky and Leonid Andreyev.
In the years that followed further controversial works and acclaim followed. His comments on the regime meant he was also put under secret police surveillance.
As World War I erupted, Kuprin opened a military hospital but was then given command of an infantry company in Finland. He was soon discharged on grounds of ill health.
The October Revolution saw him praise Lenin, but he warned that the Bolsheviks threatened Russian culture and might cause further widespread suffering to the peasants. As Civil War raged he took his family to Helsinki and then on to Paris.
Exile saw his talents decline further and his succumbing to alcoholism. He became lonely and withdrawn. The family's poverty increased his malaise.
In May 1937, the Kuprin’s returned to Moscow. He now saw his work published but wrote almost nothing new. In 1938 his health rapidly deteriorated. Already suffering from a kidney problems and sclerosis, he had now developed cancer of the oesophagus.
Alexander Kuprin died on 25th August 1938.

Burnt out and questioning life Naomi was ready for a change. Unsure of which option to take, she would end up cycling the world with a man she’d met just three times in the adventure of a lifetime. Riding through tiger reserves, cycling Cairo to Capetown and crossing the 5,416m high Thorong-la pass in Nepal this book is full of tales of adventure.
With early school reports noting Naomi would be better at sport if she at least turned up, this is not an athlete’s journey but the story of an ordinary person with a great opportunity and a can-do attitude. Set against a background of the joy of riding a bike, the journey recounted, and reflections provided on coming home it offers a story of determination, overcoming challenges, making the most of life and of course of travel, cycling and relationships.
Quote from Mark Beaumont – Long distance cyclist, broadcaster and author.
‘A wonderful perspective to discover the world and a lovingly written account of overcoming setbacks, the spirit of wanderlust and refusing to become an athlete, despite cycling a very, very long way’.
Whether a keen cyclist, traveller or someone who just loves an inspirational read then this book is for you.

    Myth-Busting the Father of Lies

Despite growing secularization, our culture still pays a lot of attention to the devil. He shows up everywhere from movies to music and is blamed for all sorts of crimes, natural disasters, and the policies of politicians we don't like. Yet in the Bible, Satan is barely present, barely speaks, and is subject to God's authority. So how has he gotten so much airtime in the lives of Christians and the wider culture?

Award-winning biographer Jared Brock sorts through the myths and misinformation about the devil, revealing a biblical adversary we need to know, including

    ● his real name, home, and life story—past, present, and apocalyptic future

    ● his actual powers—and lack of power

    ● how to spot, avoid, and overcome his tests, tricks, and tactics

When we have a biblical understanding of our adversary, we'll see new and deeper ways to follow Jesus, grasp our role in His epic story, and find hope in Christ's absolute authority over all things.
