Sinossi

In The Alleged Haunting of B—— House, a compelling assemblage of narratives from various authors, readers are drawn into a rich tapestry of ghostly encounters and psychological intrigue. The book navigates the complexities of spectral phenomena through diverse literary styles, melding gothic horror with psychological realism to explore themes of trauma, memory, and the very nature of belief. Set against a backdrop of chilling events at the infamous B—— House, the anthology captures the duality of human experience—both the fear of the unknown and the comforting allure of the familiar—making it a significant entry in contemporary supernatural literature. The anthology arises from a collaboration of diverse voices, each bringing their own perspectives and personal experiences to the table. Drawing inspiration from the folklore of hauntings and psychological studies of fear, these authors seek to explore how the past can resurface in haunting ways, echoing their own preoccupations with the ghosts of their own histories and societal anxieties. This collective endeavor not only enriches the narrative but also provides a reflection of contemporary culture's ongoing fascination with the supernatural. For readers intrigued by the intricacies of the haunted house narrative or the psychological underpinnings of fear, The Alleged Haunting of B—— House serves as an essential exploration that sheds light on the intersection of myth and reality. This anthology is highly recommended for those who appreciate literature that not only entertains but also sparks profound self-reflection.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume stories from the Masters of Horror take centre stage. Within the words from the pens of Edgar Allan Poe, E T A Hoffman, H G Wells, Guy de Maupassant and others lurk dark intentions of evil. As each story draws you in, so it is that uneasy, unsettling feelings begin to creep into our heads. It’s only a matter of time before things go decidedly from bad to much, much worse.

The story is a study of the psychology of guilt, often paired in analysis with Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart".[2] In both, a murderer carefully conceals his crime and believes himself unassailable, but eventually breaks down and reveals himself, impelled by a nagging reminder of his guilt. "The Black Cat", which also features questions of sanity versus insanity, is Poe's strongest warning against the dangers of alcoholism.
In the story, an unnamed narrator has a strong affection for pets until he perversely turns to abusing them. His favorite, a pet black cat, bites him one night and the narrator punishes it by cutting its eye out and then hanging it from a tree. The home burns down but one remaining wall shows a burned outline of a cat hanging from a noose. He soon finds another black cat, similar to the first except for a white mark on its chest, but he develops a hatred for it as well. He attempts to kill the cat with an axe but his wife stops him; instead, the narrator murders his wife. It becomes even more macabre but you will discover that by listening.

    Title: The Shadow Over Innsmouth
    Author: H. P. Lovecraft
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1936
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Part 1 of Number 56 in the Timeless Terrors series
    Description:
The Shadow Over Innsmouth is Lovecraft’s classic tale of a decaying seaside town bound to an ancient horror from the deep.
The story follows a traveler who visits the isolated port of Innsmouth, only to discover its inhabitants bear unsettling, amphibious traits — bulging eyes, flabby lips, and a strange, slinking gait. Through whispered rumors and a terrifying night on the run, he uncovers the truth: generations ago, the townsfolk struck a pact with the Deep Ones, an ancient ocean-dwelling race that offers wealth and longevity at a terrible cost.
As the narrator flees through collapsing streets and foggy wharves, pursued by inhuman figures emerging from the sea, he confronts a revelation far more disturbing than the town itself — one that ties his own fate to Innsmouth’s monstrous legacy.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this public-domain classic is revived in a fresh, chilling performance. The Shadow Over Innsmouth remains a cornerstone of maritime horror and one of Lovecraft’s most enduring nightmares.
