Action-packed stories of legendary tank soldiers in some of the bloodiest engagements of World War II, from North Africa to the Eastern Front.   With brash courage and finely honed skill, Germany’s black-clad panzer troops blasted their way into the annals of military history as feared and fearless fighters. Leading from the turrets of Panthers, Tigers, and other lethal machines, these men spearheaded the Third Reich’s offensives on the Eastern Front, in the West, and in Africa, turning T-34s and Shermans into burning wrecks and battling on even when all seemed lost. Franz Kurowski captures the essence of World War II tank combat: the rattling of tracks, the fire and smoke of rounds hitting home, the guts of the commanders who led from the front.

From a British Royal Navy officer, a detailed history of World War I’s principal battles at sea. With the call to action stations in August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson . . . This classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements—battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea—with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. Geoffrey Bennett brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies’ vital contribution to victory.Praise for Naval Battles of the First World War“Strongly recommended.” —RUSI Journal“Excellent balanced accounts and judgements.” —Richard Hough, historian and author“Extensive photographs, include key aspects such as the German battle cruiser Blucher at the Dogger Bank battle, the destruction of the British battle cruiser Queen Mary, as well as the German dreadnaught Bayern sinking after being scuttled at Scapa Flow. A fascinating diagram shows Battleship Turrets, which provides insight into the process of action, such as the shell room, cordage charge, magazine, to the cordite hoist and gun.” —Jon Sandison, historian

This biography recounts one of the most significant yet unsung military careers of the twentieth century: “a major contribution to the history of World War II” (Foreign Affairs).   General Walter Bedell Smith began his public service career of more than forty years at age sixteen, when he joined the Indiana National Guard. His bulldog tenacity earned him an opportunity to work with General George C. Marshall in 1941, playing an essential role in formation of the Combined and Joint Chiefs of Staff.   After his appointment as chief of staff to Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1942, Smith took a central part in planning the major Allied operations of World War II in Europe. Among his many duties, Smith negotiated the surrenders of the Italian and German armed forces in 1945. Smith’s postwar career included service as the US ambassador to the Soviet Union, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and undersecretary of state.   In Beetle, D. K. R. Crosswell offers the first full-length biography of the general, including insights into his close relationships with Marshall and Eisenhower. Meticulously researched and long overdue, Beetle sheds new light on Eisenhower as supreme commander, as well as the WWII campaigns in North Africa, Italy, and Europe.

“The automobile has come to stay. But when a man has no business, it is a rather expensive luxury, and I would advise no man, be he farmer or merchant, to buy one until he has sufficient income to keep it up. A horse and buggy will afford a great deal of enjoyment…” – John M. Studebaker
For a couple of generations of Americans, along with Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors, there was Studebaker, and though it is no longer in existence, the Studebaker Automobile Company is still part of the popular culture. When a 1950s family is depicted on television today, the likelihood is that the family car is a Studebaker. The symbolic power of the Studebaker name was recently exemplified when South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Kris Maher, writing in The Wall Street Journal, noted “For decades, the biggest symbol of this Midwestern city’s decline was the vacant Studebaker plant at one end of the city with its broken windows. Kevin Smith, a business owner in South Bend who bought the property to renovate it, said the empty relic was holding the city back. ‘It looms over the town,’ he said. ‘Everyone had the feeling that we could no longer compete. These days, some 40 organizations, including tech companies and a school that teaches coding to children, rent space on the 1.2 million-square-foot campus, including one building with an open floor plan and interior glass walls. Now called the Renaissance District, it is a symbol of the rebound in the state’s fourth-largest city.’”
Today, people have likely heard of the name Studebaker without realizing that before Detroit was dominated by the Big Three automakers, there was a fourth major automobile company. The story of the Studebaker company and the Studebaker family exemplifies both the American dream and the difficulty in sustaining that dream.

Rights of Man presents an impassioned defense of the Enlightenment principles of freedom and equality that Thomas Paine believed would soon sweep the world. He boldly claimed, "From a small spark, kindled in America, a flame has arisen, not to be extinguished. Without consuming...it winds its progress from nation to nation." Though many more sophisticated thinkers argued for the same principles and many people died in the attempt to realize them, no one was better able than Paine to articulate them in a way that fired the hopes and dreams of the common man and actually stirred him to revolutionary political action.

Meet the new Black friend you never had
As a Black organizer, community, business, and organization leaders often ask: "How do I get diversity in my group?" The thing is, the work is real, but it's a minefield out there. And even progressive leaders can still, perhaps unknowingly, be racist and uphold oppressive systems.
In The Token, your new token Black friend, Crystal Byrd Farmer, acts as the bridge between majority white organizations that are dedicated to social justice and "diverse" people in community they want to recruit, across identities of race, LGBTQ, education, socioeconomic status, and disability.
With a blunt style that pulls no punches, Crystal tells you how it is, calling you out on tokenism, while extending a hand to help your organization make real transformative change toward diversity and inclusion. Coverage includes: What marginalized people experience and what they need to feel safe and comfortable in order to succeed Doing "The Work" – how to have deep conversations with your membership about the reality of bias, privilege, and microaggressions Practical exercises and discussion questions How to choose appropriate meeting locations and establish ground rules, when to bring in outside help, and how to recruit support within your organization Strategies on how to talk to friends who are resistant to progressive ideas.
This no-nonsense, provocative, humorous, and accessible guide is for all well-meaning people leading progressive organizations who acknowledge the need for diversity but don't know where to start.
