Sinossi

Character Writings of the Seventeenth Century is a compelling anthology that brings together an array of prose pieces that shine a light on the complex social fabric and cultural paradigms of the early modern period. Through sharp wit and keen observation, these character sketches serve as a window into the myriad personalities that populated the 17th century, revealing not only individual traits but also broader societal norms and values. The literary style is characterized by its concise yet rich descriptions, often interlacing humor with earnest sociocultural critique, making it a significant contribution to the genre of character writing that flourished during this epoch. The collection features works by various authors, each of whom was influenced by the dramatic shifts of their time, including the rise of middle-class values and evolving attitudes towards identity and morality. Notably, such writings mirrored the transformative landscape of the 17th century, including the impact of the English Civil War and the scientific revolution. This collective effort reflects a tapestry of thought that aims to dissect both human folly and virtue, embodying the essence of the age's intellectual curiosity. My Secret Life is the longest erotic autobiography ever written. Penned anonymously during the 1800s by a wealthy English gentleman called Walter, it offers an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian era. Banned from publication for its extreme and explicit content for nearly a century, My Secret Life has now come to life in the 21st century as an immersive audio book, narrated and scored by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins.

Growing up with him was like being in my own war zone, living in perpetual fear of when the bombs would fall.
I was terrified of becoming him, and in moments I could feel I might. He still lives within me grimly like some battered demon spright. And I’m fearful of his shadow. The rage, and his blood. There are some moments when he arrives and I want to tear up the whole world with my bare hands, and all I really want is love. I want him away now. Please. Just go.

In this extraordinary memoir, Tom Mitchelson offers a deeply moving story of hope and love triumphing over adversity. It is gripping account of what it’s like for a child to grow up in an explosively violent home and explores the enormously complicated relationship Tom had with his dad, well into adulthood.
Tom grew up with identical triplet sisters and they would watch as their dad would abuse their mum, shouting obscenities in her face, brutally drag her around the house and inflict other unspeakable cruelties. It went on for years and the family never told a soul.
Tom knew his dad was a monster, yet he loved him. He was both friend and foe. Someone to fear and at the same time someone Tom felt he had to defend. When Tom became the protegee of his comprehensive school teacher, that story too turned dark.
Tom followed a career in comedy and undercover journalism and it was only after his father’s death, and becoming a father himself, that he could begin to face up to his past, leading him on a powerful journey of self-discovery.
Don’t Ask Me About My Dad is an inspirational story of our time: a rare account by someone from a deprived background speaking about the complexities of a defining relationship and finding the restorative power of fatherhood, resilience and, ultimately, how the truth can set you free.
This biography is a testament to survival and resilience, a personal journey through grief and bereavement that will leave you in awe of Tom Mitchelson's strength. It's a top pick for anyone interested in autobiography and memoirs, offering a raw and unflinching look into domestic turmoil and the complexities of relationships.
For fans of Maggie Hartley (Battered, Broken, Healed), Shannon Kyle (The Race to Truth), Linda Watson-Brown (Don't Say A Word), Katy Weitz (The Girl for the Job), and Anna Ruston (Secret Slave).

Grand Theft Giro is a raw, funny and deeply human Scottish memoir written and narrated by Frankie Gault. Set across the streets, schemes and shorelines of Inverclyde, these true stories move between chaos and tenderness, addiction and recovery, trouble and survival. Frankie tells of growing up on the west coast of Scotland in a world of giro days, dodgy decisions, near-disasters and second chances, where the line between comedy and catastrophe is always thin.
From time in prison and nights that spiralled out of control, to the unexpected kindness of strangers and the quiet loyalty of friends, each story reveals another side of working-class life in Scotland. Some chapters are laugh-out-loud funny; others are hard to listen to. All are told with unflinching honesty, sharp observation and a deep affection for the people and places that made him.
Told in Frankie’s own voice, this unabridged audiobook offers an unfiltered portrait of a man who has lived through darkness, stumbled towards recovery and found meaning in telling the truth about where he came from.
For listeners who enjoy real Scottish stories, working-class memoirs and humour drawn from lived experience, Grand Theft Giro is a powerful, unforgettable journey through one man’s life in Inverclyde.

Algernon Blackwood was born on 14th March 1869 in Shooter’s Hill, South East London, to a religious middle-class family. His mother was a widowed Duchess and his father was a Post Office administrator.

Blackwood was interested in the paranormal and the supernatural at an early age, and had a thirst for anything on Buddhism, other Oriental philosophies, mysticism and occultism. In his writings the weaving of the supernatural into his various works, from ghost stories and children’s stories to plays and long novels is clearly seen, his writings beautifully enriched by his long and diversified life experience.

After leaving university and visiting parts of Europe, mainly Switzerland, the young writer went to Canada and the United States where he took on jobs including work as a farmer, a bartender, a secretary, a journalist, a reporter, running a hotel and teaching the violin. He was voracious in meeting new people and absorbing new ideas.

In his late thirties, he returned to England where he published two of his supernatural stories in Pall Mall Magazine. As more of his highly entertaining stories were published so did his reputation and his bank balance. All those years of curiosity and experiences were starting to emerge from his writing.

In 1906, ‘The Empty House & Other Ghost Stories’ was published with tremendous success. Further volumes of short stories followed and with it a larger audience and bigger paydays. He also published children’s stories.

Blackwood also had ideas for novels and to explore on a larger canvas the paranormal world and the relationship between man and metaphysical powers including, in 1911, ‘The Centaur’.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Blackwood was assigned to British intelligence to write propaganda to support the war effort.

He was a prolific author with a quite staggering output which was also to include many plays. The exact number of his works is unknown as he would frequently write a story for a newspaper or periodical at very short notice.

In 1949, Blackwood was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his literary talents and his services during the First World War.

Algernon Blackwood died on 10th December 1951 after a series of strokes.

The mysteries of the natural world are enhanced by those of the Native American spirit world in this wonderfully descriptive short story of a man’s fishing expedition to Medicine Lake.
