  On January 16, 1944, the submarine rescue vessel USS Macaw (ASR-11) ran aground at Midway Atoll while attempting to get a towing line to the stranded submarine USS Flier (SS-250). The Flier was pulled free six days later, but another three weeks of salvage efforts failed to dislodge the Macaw. Then on February 12, the sea accomplished that task, nudging the ship into deeper water. 
   
   
   
  As night fell and the ship slowly sank, the twenty-two men on board sought refuge in the pilot house. By about 0230 Sunday, that compartment having flooded almost entirely, Burton gave the order to open the portside door and make for the foremast. Five of the men, including Burton himself, died, as did three sailors from the base at Midway in a pair of unauthorized and effectively suicidal rescue attempts that morning. 
   
   
   
  This book traces the lives of the Macaw and her enigmatic captain, from birth on San Francisco Bay to death at Midway. Ultimately, for Paul Burton and the Macaw the real enemy was the sea, and in a deadly denouement told here in riveting detail, the sea won. Highlighting the underreported role auxiliary vessels played in the war, A Strange Whim of the Sea should engage the military historian and layperson alike with the previously untold story it tells of struggle, sacrifice, death, and survival in the Pacific in World War II.

  In conjunction with the development of religions, including not just Hinduism but also Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism, the diverse traditions and ethnic groups that have called India home over the past 5,000 years combined to create a mythology that is as eclectic as it is interesting. Unraveling the details of India’s mythological systems is no easy task, but thankfully, hundreds of scholars who have studied Indian history have successfully translated thousands of ancient and medieval Indian texts into English and other modern Western languages. Generally speaking, Indian mythology originated from the ideas and practices of two ethnic groups, the Dravidians and the Aryans. Although the latter’s influence was more visibly dominant, the former was also integral in the development of Indian myths and Hinduism generally. It is also important to keep in mind the differences between mythology, theology, and rituals as they relate to Indian religion.  
  In the West, Buddhism is a religion that everyone has heard of but one that few truly understand aside from Buddhists themselves. For almost 2,500 years, Buddhism has been dominant on the Indian subcontinent, based on the traditions, beliefs, and practices that came about from the teachings of the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), the Sansrkit word for “the awakened one.” Today, three distinct branches of Buddhism have mostly fanned out across Asia, and it’s believed that upwards of half a billion people practice Buddhism today, and some of the traditional practices and principles of the religion, including the concepts of karma, reincarnation and the practice of yoga are all commonplace ideas across the world.

  The Gepids were a Germanic tribe often overshadowed by the Huns because they shared roughly the same space in Cntral Europe, yet they did not menace nearly as extensive an area. They are also overlooked because they were all but wiped out by the late 6th century, but while they were around, they influenced the course of events in central and Eastern Europe. The Gepids were no less bellicose than the other Germanic tribes or the Huns, for that matter, causing immense destruction throughout Europe and constantly threatening the stability of the Eastern Roman Empire, which later became the Byzantine Empire. It is this destruction for which the Gepids are best remembered, as well as the threat they were able to parlay into creating a sizable kingdom in what is today Hungary, but the Gepids were not merely brutal warriors. Some of their rulers demonstrated incredible political acumen. The Gepids knew how to use the powerful Byzantine Empire to their advantage and to make alliances with other Germanic tribes that helped them keep their hold on the power.  
  	By the early 6th century CE, Gepids were major players in the geopolitics of the region, and their kings knew how to use diplomacy - as much as warfare - to their advantage. However, despite their abiliites, the Gepids were eventually defeated and driven out like the Huns before them and the Avars after them. Europe was a tough place at the time, so the fact the Gepids were able to dominate there as long as they did is a testament to their marital prowess and diplomatic skills.
