Sinossi

"A Handbook of Freethought" is a pioneering compilation that articulates the philosophy and principles of freethought, embodying a rich tapestry of essays from various authors. This anthology encompasses a range of topics, from critiques of religious dogma to the advocacy for reason and scientific inquiry as foundational pillars of human understanding. The literary style is characterized by clarity and fervent rationality, reflecting the Enlightenment ideal of questioning dogma. In its historical context, the book emerges from the heightened intellectual climate of the 19th century, a period marked by a growing skepticism of traditional beliefs and an embrace of empirical thinking. The authors contributing to this anthology hail from diverse backgrounds, united by their commitment to reason and inquiry. Figures such as Paul Edwards and other noted freethought advocates were deeply influenced by the challenges of their time regarding religion and morality. Their collective insights not only question prevailing ideologies but also aim to encourage a spirit of rational thought and independence, forging a path towards a more enlightened and secular society. This anthology is highly recommended for readers seeking to explore the underpinnings of rational thought and critique of superstition. Its relevance persists in contemporary discussions about faith, science, and philosophy, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of secular thought and the ongoing quest for knowledge.

Urbanization has been one of the most significant trends of the 21st century, with more than half of the world's population now living in cities. As global populations continue to grow, an increasing number of people are flocking to urban areas, resulting in the development of some of the most densely populated cities on Earth. These megacities, home to millions of individuals, represent both the wonders and the challenges of modern life. The intensity of life in such crowded spaces shapes the experiences of those who live there, from the social fabric to the environment.

This book explores the experiences of individuals living in the most crowded urban centers, where the pressure of population density influences every aspect of daily life. It aims to examine how these cities manage their growth, deal with the challenges of overcrowding, and provide a glimpse into the lives of those navigating these spaces. The urban centers featured in this book are marked not only by their size but also by the vibrancy and diversity they house. Yet, despite the potential for economic growth and cultural exchange, these cities face significant struggles related to infrastructure, health, safety, and quality of life.

The history of urban density is also a fascinating tale of human resilience and innovation. From the early days of civilization to the present, cities have been shaped by their environments, political systems, and technological advancements. As cities grow ever more populous, the boundaries of what can be managed are constantly tested, leading to new solutions, as well as failures. The story of overcrowding is not just one of increasing numbers but also of the social, economic, and environmental impacts that come with it.

In the eighteenth century the first American medical school was established in Philadelphia. Following the model of European universities, anatomical lectures were conducted with cadavers. But where did the bodies come from? Dissection was viewed as a fate worse than death, and the only legal source of "stiffs" was executed criminals. But there were not enough. As the medical profession and its need for "anatomical material" grew, a new, macabre practice emerged: body snatching.

Body snatchers secretly obtained bodies from cemeteries and sold them to medical schools for dissection. But how did body snatching work? How did body snatchers and medical schools avoid getting caught, and what happened when they did? How did the era of the body snatchers end? Grave Dealings: Body Snatching In Philadelphia, 1762-1883 digs through archives to unearth the forgotten history of a time of graveyard patrols and anatomy riots, when the dead needed protection from the living. Philadelphia pioneered and became the center of American medical education and practice–and body snatching–in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Grave Dealings explores the social, cultural, practical, and legal aspects of body snatching in America's first capital city and relates it to the continuing ethical struggles that surround the treatment of human remains to this day.

  • Stalking the Great Killer - Arkansas's Long War on Tuberculosis - cover

    Stalking the Great Killer -...

Stalking the Great Killer is the story of Arkansas's struggle to control tuberculosis, and how the state became a model in its treatment of the disease.

To place the story of tuberculosis in Arkansas in historical perspective, the authors trace the origins of the disease. Arkansas suffered some of the worst ravages of the disease, and the authors argue that many of the improvements in the state's medical infrastructure grew out of the desperate need to control it.

In the early twentieth century, Arkansas established a sanatorium and thirty years later, the segregated Black sanitorium. These institutions helped slow the disease but at a cost: removed from families and communities, patients suffered from the isolation. Joseph Bates saw this when he delivered an uncle to the sanitorium in the 1940s. In the 1960s, Bates, now a physician, and his colleague Paul Reagan overcame a resistant medical-political system to develop a new approach to treating the disease.

In the age of Covid-19, this history offers valuable lessons about community involvement in public health, the potential efficacy of public-private partnerships, and the importance of leadership in the battle to eradicate disease.

Women in the Valley of the Kings...

The history of Egyptology is often told as yet one more grand narrative of powerful men striving to seize the day and the precious artifacts for their competing homelands. But that is only half of the story. During the Golden Age of Exploration, there were women working and exploring before Howard Carter discovered the tomb of King Tut. Before men even conceived of claiming the story for themselves, women were working in Egypt to lay the groundwork for all future exploration.

In Women in the Valley of the Kings: The Untold Story of Women Egyptologists in the Gilded Age, Kathleen Sheppard brings the untold stories of these women back into this narrative. Sheppard begins with the earliest European women who ventured to Egypt as travelers: Amelia Edwards, Jenny Lane, and Marianne Brocklehurst. Their travelogues, diaries, and maps chronicled a new world for the curious. In the vast desert, Maggie Benson, the first woman granted permission to excavate in Egypt, met Nettie Gourlay, the woman who became her lifelong companion. They battled issues of oppression and exclusion and, ultimately, are credited with excavating the Temple of Mut.

Women in the Valley of the Kings upends the grand male narrative of Egyptian exploration and shows how a group of courageous women charted unknown territory and changed the field of Egyptology forever.
