Sinopse

The Treatment of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire is a profound anthology that compiles a series of testimonies, documents, and analyses regarding the plight of Armenians during the tumultuous era of the Ottoman Empire. Written in a candid and often harrowing style, the book adopts a historical lens that is critical for understanding the societal and political climate of the time. It illuminates the cultural and socio-economic dynamics that led to widespread persecution, bridging the gap between personal narratives and broader geopolitical context, making it a pivotal text for those interested in genocide studies and Ottoman history. The authors, a diverse group of historians, journalists, and eyewitnesses, collectively convey the urgency and gravity of the Armenian plight. Their backgrounds reflect a spectrum of experiences, with many having faced persecution themselves or being descended from survivors. Their commitment to unearthing historical truths is evident through meticulous research and sourcing, revealing the complexities of identity and survival in the face of adversity. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to grasp the historical roots of contemporary ethnic tensions and humanitarian issues. It stands as a crucial educational resource, fostering awareness, empathy, and understanding that transcends time, making it an indispensable addition to the library of anyone interested in human rights and historical justice.

    The Black Man's President -...

In a little-noted eulogy delivered after Lincoln's assassination, Frederick Douglass called the president "emphatically the black man's president," the "first to show any respect for their rights as men." Douglass pointed not just to Lincoln's official acts and utterances, like the Emancipation Proclamation or the Second Inaugural Address, but also to the president's own personal experiences with Black people.

But Lincoln's description as "emphatically the black man's president" rests on more than his relationship with Douglass or on his official words and deeds. Lincoln interacted with many other African Americans during his presidency. His unfailing cordiality to them, his willingness to meet with them in the White House, to honor their requests, to invite them to consult on public policy, to treat them with respect whether they were kitchen servants or leaders of the Black community, to invite them to attend receptions, to sing and pray with them in their neighborhoods—all those manifestations of an egalitarian spirit justified the tributes paid to him by Frederick Douglass and other African Americans.

Historian David S. Reynolds observed that only by examining Lincoln's "personal interchange with Black people do we see the complete falsity of the charges of innate racism that some have leveled against him over the years."

    The Making of a Democratic...

Our economy is designed by the 1 percent, for the 1 percent. This book offers a compelling vision of an equitable, ecologically sustainable alternative that meets the essential needs of all people.

Seventy-one percent of the American people say the economy is rigged against them, and they're right. Marjorie Kelly and Ted Howard describe the current economic system as the Extractive Economy-it enables the financial elite to extract maximum gain for themselves, heedless of any damage to people or planet. As an alternative, they offer the Democratic Economy, which is responsive to the concerns of ordinary people and balances human consumption with the regenerative capacity of the earth.

Kelly and Howard lay out seven principles of a Democratic Economy: Community, Inclusion, Place (keeping wealth local), Good Work (putting labor before capital), Democratized Ownership, Ethical Finance, and Sustainability. The book pairs each principle with a portrait of a place where it is being put into practice, from Pine Ridge to Portland to Cleveland to Preston, England, and more. This is a powerful, coherent, and achievable vision of an economy that serves the many, not the few.

Gifted People - Being Aware of...

I felt compelled to share what I've recently discovered about giftedness. Personally, I wish I had been informed about this particular divergence from the average human brain earlier. However, my intention is not to attract undue attention or create a sense of superiority over others.

When I mentioned to my parents that many descriptions of gifted individuals resonated with my own experiences, they were hesitant to accept this label. The term "gifted" often carries implications of superiority, which can seem boastful. Yet, true talent or giftedness should foster humility and gratitude, coupled with a determination to navigate the challenges that come with such exceptional qualities.

Saying you are gifted often results in perceptions of being smarter than others. Yet, those who grasp these concepts usually understand that increased knowledge reveals the vast extent of what remains unknown. Even if you grasp things more quickly than others, the paradox is that those who believe they know everything are often the least knowledgeable. This can create a paradox for those trying to find self-confidence in their intelligence or creative abilities.
