  Set during the Napoleonic Wars, this story features two French Hussar officers, D'Hubert and Feraud. Their quarrel over an initially minor incident turns into a bitter, long-drawn out struggle over the following fifteen years, interwoven with the larger conflict that provides its backdrop. At the beginning, Feraud is the one who jealously guards his honor and repeatedly demands satisfaction anew when a duelling encounter ends inconclusively; he aggressively pursues every opportunity to locate and duel his foe. As the story progresses, D'Hubert also finds himself caught up in the contest, unable to back down or walk away.    This Conrad short story evidently has its genesis in the real duels that two French Hussar officers fought in the Napoleonic era. Their names were Dupont and Fournier, which Conrad disguised slightly, changing Dupont into D'Hubert and Fournier into Feraud. In 1977, it was turned into a movie, "The Duellists", starring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel.

  Means and Ends is a new overview of the revolutionary strategy of anarchism in Europe and the United States between 1868 and 1939. Zoe Baker clearly and accessibly explains the ideas that historical anarchists developed in order to change the world. This includes their views on direct action, revolution, organization, state socialism, reforms, and trade unions. Throughout, she demonstrates that the reasons anarchists gave for supporting or opposing particular strategies were grounded in a theoretical framework—a theory of practice—which maintained that, as people engage in activity, they simultaneously change the world and themselves. This theoretical framework was the foundation for the anarchist commitment to the unity of means and ends: the means that revolutionaries propose to achieve social change have to involve forms of activity which transform people into individuals who are capable of, and driven to, both overthrow capitalism and the state and build a free society. The consistent heart of anarchism was the idea that anarchist ends can only be achieved through anarchist means.   This book is the result of 30+ interviews of genius-level science professionals in various fields. They have all been asked the same set of questions, and have answered, to the best of their ability and knowledge. What you’re about to read is the answers to these questions, not from all the individuals, but from the most interesting 4 or 5 who answered each question. These interviews are for two kinds of audiences: 1) curious amateurs, and 2) science, engineering, or other professionals who have a general knowledge of and curiosity about science, but who are not experts in the field being covered.  
  At the start of my journey in science, I already had a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, but that was from 1998, certainly not 2016 when I started. Reading scientific papers was difficult at first – I understood about 10% of what I was reading. As I interviewed more scientists, researchers, clinicians and others, I started to pick up the vocabulary and thinking process needed to read scientific papers. After a year of reading, my comprehension increased, and now stands at around 70%, typically. In the areas of Physics or other sciences in which I’m not conversant, I understand about 30%. In advanced math, since it’s a language unto itself, especially at high levels, I am back to the 10% level.
