Sinossi

In "The Essential Works of Thomas Paine," readers are introduced to a meticulously curated collection of the pivotal writings that fueled the American Revolutionary spirit and laid the groundwork for modern democratic thought. This compilation showcases Paine's distinctive prose, characterized by clarity, fervor, and a compelling rhetorical style that resonates with both fervent advocacy and reasoned argumentation. The book spans various themes—ranging from governance, religion, and human rights to social justice—demonstrating Paine's ability to intertwine moral philosophy with practical political advocacy within the context of 18th-century Enlightenment ideas. Thomas Paine, a pivotal figure in the formation of American identity, was born in England but found his most significant voice in the nascent United States. His tumultuous upbringing and experiences as a customs officer, teacher, and pamphleteer provided fertile ground for his revolutionary ideas. "Common Sense," arguably his most influential work, along with essays like "The Rights of Man" and "The Age of Reason," not only reflect his commitment to democratic ideals but also reveal his deep disdain for tyranny and dogma, which propelled him to challenge the status quo. "The Essential Works of Thomas Paine" is indispensable for anyone seeking insight into the foundational texts that shaped America's ideological landscape. Academics, historians, and the general reader will find this collection invaluable for understanding the principles of liberty and justice that continue to inspire movements for social change today. Engage with Paine's bold ideas and discover how his passion for egalitarianism remains profoundly relevant.

  • How Polarization Begets Polarization - Ideological Extremism in the US Congress - cover

    How Polarization Begets...

Extreme polarization in American politics is perhaps the most confounding political phenomenon of our time. This book binds together polarization in Congress and polarization in the electorate within an ever-expanding feedback loop. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties on their Congressional members and district candidates and endorsed by the voters in each Congressional district who must choose between the alternatives offered. Tight national party discipline produces party delegations in Congress that are widely separated from one another but each ideologically narrowly distributed.

As district constituencies become more polarized and are egged on by activists, parties are further motivated to appeal to their respective bases rather than to voters in the ideological center. America has indeed acquired parties with clear platforms—once thought to be a desirable goal—but these parties are now feuding camps. What resolution might there be? Just as the progressive movement slowly replaced the Gilded Age, might a new reform effort replace the current squabble? Or could an asymmetry develop in the partisan constraints that would lead to ascendancy of the center, or might a new and over-riding issue generate a cross-cutting dimension, opening the door to a new politics? Only the future will tell.

The Inside Story of Ireland's Pandemic: Every Decision, Every Player, Every Text, Every Leak
Ireland's lockdowns were among the harshest and longest in Europe. As the state was battered by waves of disease time and again, unparalleled pressures and untold tensions emerged as the country went to war with Covid, and policymakers and politicians did battle with each other.
How were the key decisions made? Who held all the power?
Boasting unrivalled access to the key decision-makers and drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews and thousands of pages of documents, including confidential and unpublished material, Pandemonium reveals the moves, the power-plays and the – at times jaw-dropping – tactics of a government with the health of a nation in its hands.
'If a movie is ever made of how Ireland responded to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pandemonium may well provide the script … You will feel as if you were in the room when key conversations happened and decisions were made.' Professor Luke O'Neill

When a seven-million-vote margin of victory and 306 electoral votes pointed to Joe Biden as the victor in the 2020 Presidential Election, Trump-fueled conspiracy theories exploded.

In The Big Truth, CBS's Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett and the nation's foremost elections expert David Becker completely upend The Big Lie that has infected the Far Right with firsthand stories of election officials like Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Bucks County, Pennsylvania, election director Thomas Freitag. And they reveal the concrete evidence proving that 2020 may have been the most secure US election ever. But Garrett and Becker go beyond the key players from all six swing states, the pre-election litigation that clarified the rules for both parties, and the fully auditable and verifiable ballots used. They lay bare the methods being undertaken right now to undercut faith, belief, and effectiveness of elections, identifying the places where the most dire actions have been taken since 2020—where election laws have been changed; or election officials been hounded out of office, retired out of frustration/fatigue, or been replaced by pro-Trump political figures.

    Living Together - Inventing...

Is moral philosophy more foundational than political theory? It is often assumed to be. David Schmidtz argues that the reverse is true: the question of how to live in a community is more fundamental than questions about how to live. This book questions whether we are getting to the foundations of human morality when we ignore contingent features of communities in which political animals live.

Schmidtz contends that theorizing about how to live together should take its cue from contemporary moral philosophy's attempts to go beyond formal theory, and ask which principles have a history of demonstrably being organizing principles of actual thriving communities at their best. Ideals emerging from such research should be a distillation of social scientific insight from observable histories of successful community building. What emerges from ongoing testing in the crucible of life experience will be path-dependent in detail even if not in general outline, partly because any way of life is a response to challenges that are themselves contingent, path dependent, and in flux.

Building on this view, Schmidtz argues that justice evolved as a device for grounding peace in the mutual recognition that everyone has their own life to live, and everyone has the right and the responsibility to decide for themselves what to want.
