Sinossi

In "Rules and Directions for the Employment of Injections in Various Diseases," Thomas Lewis presents a comprehensive examination of the therapeutic use of injections in medical practice during the 19th century. The book is characterized by its meticulous detail and methodical approach, combining empirical observations with emerging medical theories of the time. Lewis employs a clear, didactic style aimed at both physicians and medical students, making complex information accessible. The context of this work reflects an era marked by the professionalization of medicine and the increasing importance of clinical practices, with injections being a pivotal advancement in therapeutics. Thomas Lewis, a prominent physician, was deeply influenced by the medical advancements of his time, including the burgeoning field of pharmacology and the acceptance of injections as a legitimate treatment modality. His extensive experience in clinical settings and his commitment to improving patient care often inspired him to document his findings and insights. Lewis's contributions exemplify the transition from traditional treatments to more scientifically grounded practices, highlighting both innovation and the evolving role of physicians in the healthcare landscape. I highly recommend this book for those interested in the history of medicine, particularly the development of injection techniques. Scholars, medical practitioners, and historians will gain invaluable insights from Lewis's pioneering perspectives, making it a crucial addition to any medical library.

    Agency and Cognitive Development

Children of different ages live in different worlds. This is partly due to learning: as children learn more and more about the world they experience it in different ways. But learning cannot be the whole story or else children could learn anything at any age—which they cannot.

Michael Tomasello argues that children of different ages live and learn in different worlds because their capacities to cognitively represent and operate on their experience change in significant ways over the first years of life. These capacities change because they are elements in a maturing cognitive architecture evolved for agentive decision making and action, including in shared agencies in which individuals must mentally coordinate with others. The developmental proposal is that from birth infants are goal-directed agents who cognitively represent and learn about actualities; at 9-12 months toddlers become intentional (and joint) agents who also imaginatively and perspectively represent and learn about possibilities; and at 3-4 years children become metacognitive (and collective) agents who also metacognitively represent and learn about objective/normative necessities. These developing agentive architectures—originally evolved in humans' evolutionary ancestors for particular types of decision making and action—help to explain why children learn what they do when they do.

This timely and important book focuses on the controversial issue of SLAPP cases – Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation – which are designed to censor, intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with aggressive opposing lawyers, heavy legal costs and enquiry agents until they abandon the case.
David Hooper, veteran media lawyer, explores how the power of money enabled the very wealthy to crush their critics and outlines the tactics they used.
He examines how billionaire oligarchs, often ex-convicts and linked to organised crime, have tried to launder their reputation in this country by suing for libel, and how they have found lawyers only too happy to pocket their roubles.
Hooper describes his experience with some of these oligarchs, including Boris Berezovsky when Hooper needed an armed bodyguard while collecting evidence in Moscow. It was a case where both plaintiffs were ultimately murdered, as was his client, the editor of Forbes Russia.
The UK also has its home-grown Slappsters, of whom Nadhim Zahawi and Mohamed Amersi are the most recent examples. They also come from Greece, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Malta and the United States. Hooper describes how those with something to hide tried, with varying degrees of success, to stop you knowing about it, and how their lawyers were willing to help them. The well-paid legal profession does not emerge with credit.

Uncommon infections represent the frontiers of medical challenge, where diagnostic complexity, rapid progression, and severe outcomes converge to create some of the most daunting scenarios in clinical medicine. This comprehensive exploration delves into three distinct yet equally consequential infections—Meningitis, Elephantiasis (Lymphatic Filariasis), and Legionella pneumophila infection—each exemplifying the remarkable diversity of microbial pathogenesis and the profound ways in which rare infections can transform human health and lives.
The narrative of rare and severe infections extends beyond their medical rarity; it encompasses the intricate biological mechanisms, unique transmission patterns, and complex clinical presentations that make these conditions simultaneously fascinating to researchers and devastating to patients. By examining the neurological inflammation of meningitis, the disfiguring lymphatic disruption of elephantiasis, and the respiratory assault of Legionella, this book illuminates how different pathogenic organisms exploit specific biological vulnerabilities to produce extraordinarily consequential diseases. Readers will journey through the epidemiological landscapes where these infections emerge—from the global burden of meningococcal disease to the tropical endemic regions of lymphatic filariasis and the modern built environments where Legionella thrives—while exploring the scientific advances in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention that offer hope against these formidable pathogens.
