Sinossi

A beautiful pocket-sized collection featuring Wordsworth's Lucy Poems complete with an introductory excerpts from Thomas De Quincey and Thomas Carlyle.

“The Lucy Poems” are a series of five poems written by Wordsworth from 1798 to 1801, most of which were first published in his famous “Lyrical Ballads”. Imbued with abstract ideals of nature, beauty, love, longing and death, the poems were written during a short period when Wordsworth lived in Germany and concentrate on his longing for his friend Coleridge, as well as his irritation at his sister and travelling companion, Dorothy. Contents include: "Strange Fits Of Passion Have I Known", "She Dwelt Among The Untrodden Ways", "I Travelled Among Unknown Men", "Three Years She Grew In Sun And Shower", and "A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal".

William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was an English Romantic poet famous for helping to usher in the Romantic Age in English literature with the publication of “Lyrical Ballads” (1798), which he co-wrote with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His best known work is perhaps “The Prelude”, a semi-autobiographical poem from his early years which was changed and expanded many times throughout his life. He was also notably poet laureate of Britain between 1843 until his death in 1850.

Two works examining antisemitism and the scapegoating of minorities by the founder of the world’s oldest institution dedicated to studying the Holocaust. The inaugural title in a collaboration between the Wiener Library and Granta Books. These two pamphlets, “Prelude to Pogroms? Facts for the Thoughtful” and “German Judaism in Political, Economic and Cultural Terms” mark the first time that Alfred Wiener, the founder of the Wiener Holocaust Library, has been published in English. Together they offer a vital insight into the antisemitic onslaught Germany’s Jews were subjected to as the Nazi Party rose to power, and introduce a sharp and sympathetic thinker and speaker to a contemporary audience. Tackling issues such as the planned rise of antisemitism and the scapegoating of minorities, these pamphlets speak as urgently to the contemporary moment as they provide a window on to the past.

"We need more writers with bite. We have lived in the flatlands too long," writes John Barnie in one of his 'observations' ('Art in the Flatlands'). And bite he delivers.

Ranging across politics, history, culture, ecological disaster, the meaning of truth, poetry, what we mean by identity and more… Barnie shares a window onto the world that is both erudite and particular. Leaning towards pessimism in a darkening world, these observations are often provocative, not from any bullish desire to antagonise, but as the result of mining a rationalist line of thought with an honesty and consistency that is applied as much to the author as to his subjects. There is a clarity here that some may find uncomfortable, but the aim is always dialogue above agreement; intellectual engagement above cheap solutions and sentimentality.

Barnie asks us to think, consider and dig deeper, but most of all he asks that we "…live richly among our secondary self-created meanings, while recognising them for what they are. To face without flinching the nullity of the great void." ('Varieties of Meaning')
Tsunami Days is a vital collection of essays for those prepared to engage with its unflinching observations.

The Italians were defeated at Adwa in 1898. But by 1935, they were playing for keeps. Learn more about the devastating Italian invasion of Ethiopia.
Although the Ethiopians had beaten the Italians at their own game in the 1898 Battle of Adwa, when Italian armored divisions began pouring out of Italian-controlled Eritrea in 1935, the situation seemed almost impossible to overcome. This was not 1898 when the Italians were ill-equipped and ill-advised in their undertakings. The Italians had made sure they were guaranteed the upper hand. They had the best tanks and the best aircraft they could get their hands on.
The Ethiopians had no tanks and only a handful of old planes. Their arms were also hopelessly outdated. They were not much better than the weaponry they had used back in 1898. The Italians were determined to win this time around, and few thought the Ethiopians had much of a chance.
Although Ethiopian armaments left much to be desired, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailie Selassie placed much of his hope in an international body known as the League of Nations. He ultimately had to flee his country when the Italians poured in. Selassie would continue to harangue the League of Nations from exile.
But what happened after this? And what exactly happened during the invasion itself? This audiobook aims to explore just that. Explore why the Italians wanted Ethiopia to begin with, and discover the story of Ethiopians who were willing to fight and die for the freedom of their country.
In this audiobook, you will learn:The geopolitical background before the invasionHow the invasion was planned and what it entailedThe major battles fought during the Second Italo-Ethiopian WarThe exile of Haile Selassie and how he continued to take a stand in exileWhat happened to Ethiopia

Sometimes a murder story lingers for years after the event. This one has lingered for more than a century, especially in New England. The setting is winter, 1873 on a small, obscure island ten miles off the coast of Maine. Three women await the return of their men the following morning. A killer, who learns they are alone for one night, is rowing to their island, across ten miles of open sea.
The next day, a horrific scene is discovered. It stuns the seacoast towns and begins a series of events that are covered nationally in the months that follow. Recreated from the trial transcript, archived news stories and other sources, Cold Water Crossing tells what happened that long ago evening and why controversy remains to this day.
