In artist Paul Klee’s The Twittering Machine, the bird-song of a machine acts as bait to lure humankind into a pit of damnation. Leading political writer Richard Seymour argues that this is a chilling metaphor for our relationship with social media. Former social media executives tell us that the system is an addiction-machine. We are users, waiting for our next hit as we like, comment and share. We write to the machine as individuals, but it responds by aggregating our fantasies, desires and frailties into data, and returning them to us as a commodity experience. Through journalism, psychoanalytic reflection and insights from users, developers, security experts and others, Seymour probes the human side of the machine, asking what we’re getting out of it, and what we’re getting into.“Richard Seymour has a brilliant mind and a compelling style.” GUARDIAN“A brilliant, urgent, game-changing intervention.” CHINA MIÉVILLE

John McPhee's Pulitzer Prize-winning Annals of the Former World takes readers on mind-expanding adventures in geology. In the first book, Basin and Range, McPhee traveled to Nevada with a proponent of plate techtonics. Now, an engaging sceptic working for the United States Geological Survey is his guide to some of eastern America's most fascinating geologic formations.
Respected geologist Anita Harris doesn't completely accept the reigning gospel of plate tectonics. Rather than limiting herself to one theory, the Brooklyn native insists on letting the rocks tell their own stories.
Pickaxe and hydrochloric acid in hand, Harris guides McPhee to terrain that speaks of sudden, cataclysmic events and the spectacular, relatively recent, movement of glaciers.
Author John McPhee is celebrated for his elegant style and skill in making specialized material accessible. When the narrative talents of Nelson Runger are added, you will discover that the intricacies of geology become not only understandable, but most entertaining.

    Domestication of Dogs and Cats...

As the oft-repeated and invariably accurate pearl of wisdom goes, a dog truly is man's best friend. For a long time, people have almost universally loved dogs, and it seems to have been that way for at least tens of thousands of years. When affection is abundantly and consistently expressed, this pure, unspoken, wholesome love is one that is very much requited, and then some. This bond can be demonstrated by the mere existence of pet keepers who unironically refer to themselves as “dog parents,” not merely “dog owners.”
Of course, this camaraderie between man and dog did not materialize overnight. Quite the contrary, the relationship between people and dogs gradually evolved and steadily strengthened over several millennia, following a premise best summed up by the dog's metamorphosis from a predator to a lifelong companion. Apart from friendship and companionship, dogs may have been the first animal to be domesticated, and they have been trained to provide loyal and competent service in a variety of fields, ranging from seeing-eye dogs to vest-wearing police partners, among other lines of work.
People's obsession with felines is an enigma in and of itself. Unlike dogs, famously known as man's most excitable, trustworthy, and loyal friend, cats are oftentimes indifferent, guarded, and yet finicky little furry creatures who only yearn for attention and affection when one is neck-deep in work or otherwise preoccupied. And still, people adore them all the same.
In a recent poll that surveyed 600 American college students, 60% of the participants identified themselves as “dog lovers,” whereas only 11% pledged their love for cats. The remaining 29% regarded themselves as fans of both critters or fans of neither. Be that as it may, there is said to be anywhere between a staggering 88=94 million pet cats in the United States alone, which eclipses the roughly 84-90 million pet dogs in the country.

This book includes my lecture notes for electrical power transmission course. The power transmission process, from generation to distribution is described and expressions for resistance, inductance and capacitance of high-voltage power transmission lines are developed used to determine the equivalent circuit of a three-phase transmission line. The book is divided to different learning outcomesPart 1- Describe the power transmission process, from generation to distribution.Part 2- Develop expressions for resistance, inductance and capacitance of high-voltage power transmission lines and determine the equivalent circuit of a three-phase transmission line.Part 1: Describe the power transmission process, from generation to distribution.Describe the components of an electrical power system.Identify types of power lines, standard voltages, and components of high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL).Describe the construction of a transmission line, galloping lines, corona effect, insulator pollution, and lightning strikes.Explain transmission system stability in regards to power transfer, power flow division, and transfer impedance.Part 2: Develop expressions for resistance, inductance and capacitance of high-voltage power transmission lines and determine the equivalent circuit of a three-phase transmission line.List the types of conductors used in power transmission line.Develop the expression for the inductance and capacitance of a simple, single-phase, two wire transmission line composed of solid round conductors.Deduce the expression for the inductance and capacitance of a simple, single-phase composite (stranded) conductor line.Derive the expression for the inductance and capacitance of three-phase lines having symmetrically and asymmetrically spacing and for bundled conductors.Discuss the effect of earth on the capacitance of three-phase transmission lines.Derive the short transmission lines models and medium transmission lines models.

    Subtract - The Untapped Science...

This program includes an introduction and epilogue read by the author.Blending evidence across science and design, Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less offers a revolution in problem-solving: proving why we overlook subtraction, and how we can access its true potentialWe pile on “to-dos” but don’t consider “stop-doings.” We create incentives for good behavior, but don’t get rid of obstacles to it. We collect new-and-improved ideas, but don’t prune the outdated ones. Every day, across challenges big and small, we neglect a basic way to make things better: we don’t subtract.Leidy Klotz’s pioneering research shows why. Whether we’re building Lego models or cities, grilled-cheese sandwiches or strategic plans, our minds tend to add before taking away. Even when we do think of it, subtraction can be harder to pull off because an array of biological, cultural, and economic forces push us towards more. But we have a choice—our blind spot need not go on taking its toll on our cities, our institutions, and our minds. By diagnosing our neglect of subtraction, we can treat it.Subtract will change how you change your world. In these pages you’ll meet subtracting exemplars: design geniuses, Nobel Prize-winners, rock-stars, and everyday heroes, who have subtracted to dismantle racism, advance knowledge, heal the planet, and even tell better jokes. These and more guiding lights show how we can revolutionize not just our day-to-day lives, but our collective legacy. A paradigm shift of a book, Subtract shows us how to find more of the options we’ve been missing—and empowers us to pursue them.A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books“This is a captivating, perceptive read on one of the most basic mistakes that we make in the pursuit of success and happiness...If the defining word of your life is ‘more,’ you need to read this book.”--Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and Originals, and host of the TED podcast WorkLife
