  Stacy Aumonier was a British writer best known for his outstanding short stories. Nobel Prize-winner John Galsworthy described Aumonier as 'one of the best short story writers of all time' and predicted that he would 'outlive all the writers of his day'. Aumonier wrote over 85 short stories in his lifetime. He has been described as the 'British Maupassant', owing to his captivating plots and his ability to create complex characters with just a few lines of carefully selected prose. His intensely visual prose meant his works were readily adaptable to the cinema screen, and several of his short stories were adapted by Alfred Hitchcock.'One Law for the Rich' is the tale of two brothers, one a rich and successful businessman, the other a poor man whose business only just makes ends meet. At a cousin's funeral, both men catch a stinking cold. One is able to afford the best doctors and medicines London can provide...the other must rely on home remedies. But how will each invalid fare?

This was the Weekly Poetry project for January 23rd, 2011.Sir Henry Parkes, GCMG (27 May 1815 – 27 April 1896) was an Australian statesman, the "Father of Federation." As the earliest advocate of a Federal Council of the colonies of Australia, a precursor to the Federation of Australia, he is generally considered the most prominent of the Australian Founding Fathers.Parkes was described during his lifetime by The Times as "the most commanding figure in Australian politics". Alfred Deakin described him as "though not rich or versatile, his personality was massive, durable and imposing, resting upon elementary qualities of human nature elevated by a strong mind. He was cast in the mould of a great man and though he suffered from numerous pettinesses, spites and failings, he was in himself a large-brained self-educated Titan whose natural field was found in Parliament and whose resources of character and intellect enabled him in his later years to overshadow all his contemporaries".Parkes's literary work includes six volumes of verse, Stolen Moments (1842), Murmurs of the Stream (1857), Studies in Rhyme (1870), The Beauteous Terrorist and Other Poems (1885), Fragmentary Thoughts (1889), Sonnets and Other Verses (1895). It has been the general practice to laugh at Parkes's poetic efforts, and it is true that his work could sometimes be almost unbelievably bad. Yet though he had no real claims to be a poet he wrote some weak, sincere verse which has occasionally been included in Australian anthologies. (Summary from Wikipedia.)

  The Short Stories of W W Jacobs...

  William Wymark Jacobs was born on 8th September 1863 in Wapping, East London.  
   
  He was educated at a private school and then Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution, now part of the University of London. 
   
  In 1879, Jacobs began work as a clerk in the civil service, in the Post Office Savings Bank.  In 1885 his first short story was published but it was not until almost the turn of the century that he would abandon his post office career to that as a full-time writer. By then he was a very popular author, his collections selling extremely well and with an excellent income. 
   
  His best-known work is the macabre ‘The Monkey's Paw’ and he is also highly regarded for his ghost stories although much of his remaining short story output is streaked with humour.  His characters are immediately identifiable and we all know that life will take chunks out of them in no time at all.  
   
  Jacobs married the noted suffragette Agnes Eleanor Williams in 1900 at West Ham, Essex. They went on to have two daughters and three sons as they settled down to life.  
   
  By the outbreak of the First World War his literary output had declined and he now mainly spent his time rewriting his earlier stories for the stage.  In all he wrote 18 plays. 
   
  W W Jacobs died on 1st September 1943 at Hornsey Lane, Islington in London. He was 79.
