Sinossi

WINNER OF THE 2019 GERALD LAMPERT MEMORIAL AWARD
Can poems mourn the unmourned? In Obits. a speaker tries and fails to write obituaries for those whose memorials are missing, those who are represented only as statistics. She considers victims of mass deaths, fictional characters, and her own aunt, asking what does it mean to be an 'I' mourning a 'you' when both have been othered? Centring vulnerability, the various answers to this question pass through trauma, depression, and the experience of being a mixed-race queer woman.

Mary Simmons’s debut is a world unto itself: a dark storybook realm, lush and full of eerie possibility, a place outside of time where women move in different forms and pass on warnings and wisdom. In the spirit of a Victorian naturalist’s collection, this book brings together found elements from nature, folklore, mythology, ballet, and oral tradition, crafting a strange, kaleidoscopic beauty and complicating inherited definitions of femininity. As these poems blur dichotomies—maiden and witch, mother and daughter, friend and lover—they reach for a new vision of womanhood beyond the bounds of roles and expectations, one that is mystical, ethereal, a little dangerous, and inherently queer. In the process, they tap into deep currents of yearning, grapple with corporeality, raise larger questions about love and what lasts, and find meaning in the uncanny and the macabre. In these pages are insects and omens, wolves and birds and weird apparitions, Odile and Ophelia, even a seventeenth-century professional poisoner. Original, atmospheric, and immersive, this is a work like no other: a tour through an enchanted forest, a darkness that’s illuminating.

"Beowulf" is an Old English epic poem and one of the most significant and influential works of early English literature. Consisting of over 3,000 lines, it narrates the tale of its hero, Beowulf, and his adventures as he battles the monster Grendel, Grendel's mother, and later in his life, a dragon. The poem delves into themes of heroism, bravery, the transient nature of life, and the conflict between good and evil. Written by an unknown poet, "Beowulf" dates back to somewhere between the 8th and early 11th century and is preserved in a single manuscript known as the Nowell Codex.

A spun radio dial passing clean through poetry. A stuttering loop of Endgame recorded by Stockhausen, remixed by Kraftwerk. The chatter of minotaurs and metadata. Transmissions from far-off futures or new pasts, recordings from a recoded present topped off with a cherry. Evel Knievel, above it all, mysterious, forever taciturn. Mission Creep comes on with the inferno of apocalyptic prophecy and melts on your tongue like the last snowflake of a nuclear winter.

    Praise for Joshua Trotter:

'Joshua Trotter’s long-awaited debut is here, and it’s every bit as good as we’d hoped. His poems have the one maker’s mark of authenticity that absolutely cannot be faked: a fresh style that holds novelty and tradition in creative tension. ... By turns funny and terrifying, airy and claustrophobic, non-representational and razor-sharp, Trotter is stock to buy early and hold.' – National Post (on All This Could Be Yours)

Based on the provocative tale of suspense, horror and repressed sexuality, this adaptation gives the famous story yet another turn of its own. A young governess journeys to a lonely English manor house to care for two recently orphaned children. But she is not their first governess. Her predecessor, Miss Jessel, drowned herself when she became pregnant by the sadistic valet, Peter Quint, who was himself found dead soon after under mysterious circumstances. Now the new governess has begun to see the specters of Quint and Jessel haunting the children, and she must find a way to stop the fiends before it is too late. But one frightening question tortures the would-be heroine: Are the ghosts real, or are they the product of her own fevered imagination?
