Sinossi

"Comprehensive and visionary, Reading the Bible on Turtle Island reimagines Christian faith in view of Indigenous experiences and identity."—Foreword Reviews, November/December 2025
Join the dance of North American Indigenous interpretations of Christian Scripture
In Reading the Bible on Turtle Island, Indigenous scholars Chris Hoklotubbe and Danny Zacharias explore what it means to read the Bible from the lens of Indigenous peoples in North America. Exploring the intersection of Scripture, Cultural Traditions, Hearts and Minds, and Creation, they affirm Creator's presence with Indigenous people since the beginning. By recovering these rich histories, this book offers a fresh reading of Scripture that celebrates the assets, blessings, and insights of Indigenous interpretation.
Indigenous culture has often been dismissed or deemed problematic within Western Christian circles, and historical practices have often communicated that Indigenous worldviews have little to offer the church or its understanding of Scripture. Hoklotubbe and Zacharias challenge this perspective, reasserting the dignity of these cultures that were condemned through colonial practices and showing how Indigenous interpretations bring invaluable insights to all of God's people.
In Reading the Bible on Turtle Island, Hoklotubbe and Zacharias:

- Affirm the dignity and value of Indigenous cultures and their contributions to hermeneutics.
- Explore the intersection of the Bible with Indigenous traditions.
- Delve deeply into the stories of Scripture alongside the complex histories of Indigenous communities in North America.
- Celebrate the unique blessings and insights of Indigenous interpretation.
- Offer a fresh, transformative reading of the Bible that speaks to all of God's people.
Reading the Bible on Turtle Island is a vital resource for scholars who are interested in the intersection of biblical studies and social location, who are seeking to explore Scripture through an Indigenous hermeneutic, or who desire to learn more about the contributions of Indigenous worldviews to Biblical interpretation. This is the second book by Pastor Omar Fisher as he details the far-reaching consequences of prison on our society. This writing investigates the lives of those recently released from prison and the corresponding experiences of Pastor Omar as he visited and interacted with those who were incarcerated and their families and their communities. This book is a direct follow-up to Pastor Omar's first book, Confrontations, which detailed how by the grace of God he was able to start an international prison ministry having never been incarcerated and the confrontations he experienced along the way. In this current book, Pastor Omar has been doing prison ministry for several years and has seen how it continues to impact the lives of individuals and those connected to them long after they are released from prison. Prison has truly affected our society like nothing else and Pastor Omar pulls back the veil and gives us a glimpse into its consequences and uses that to shed light on some even greater consequences humanity has experienced on a whole.
Pastor Omar Fisher started doing prison ministry in 2003 and authored his first book, Confrontations, in 2008 which detailed how he started his prison ministry and the different challenges he faced along the way. He continued to do prison ministry regularly until 2021 when he began pastoring Geiger Memorial Brethren Church in Philadelphia, PA. He still stays in touch with numerous inmates and visits prisons on occasion to preach the Word of God and also encourages and equips pastors and laymen and laywomen to enter into the prisons and continue to be blessings to a forgotten section of our society.

Relish these direct, experiential meditation instructions from the author of the bestselling Introduction to Tantra.Lama Yeshe tells us that mahamudra is “the universal reality of emptiness, of nonduality” and its unique characteristic is its emphasis on meditation: “With mahamudra meditation there is no doctrine, no theology, no philosophy, no God, no Buddha. Mahamudra is only experience.”He relies on the First Panchen Lama’s well-known Root Text of Genden Mahamudra, which in a few short pages provides the pith instructions for, first, overcoming distraction and resting in meditative stillness on the clarity of one’s own mind, and then, with subtle awareness, penetrating its ultimate nature, its emptiness. As always, Lama Yeshe’s words are direct, funny, and incredibly encouraging. He gets us to go beyond ego’s addiction to a limited sense of self and to taste the lightness and expansiveness of our own true nature.
