  The speaker of these poems probes romantic and interracial intimacy, the strangeness and difficulty of his experiences as a diasporic Black African in White America, his time working as a teacher's assistant in a third-grade classroom, and his ambivalent admiration for canonical poets who have influenced him, especially Sylvia Plath. Juxtaposing traditional forms such as sonnets and elegies with less orthodox interjections, such as prose-poem "prayers" and other meditations, the collection presents a poetic world both familiar and jarring—one in which history, the body, and poetry can collide in a single surprising turn of image: "The stars also suffer. Immense and dead, their gasses burn / distant like castanets of antebellum teeth. My open window / a synecdoche of country."

  Death Be Not Proud

  This week we’re marking the American Memorial Day with eleven readings of a John Donne poem. Memorial Day was conceived as a time to remember military men and women who had lost their lives in war. Kings and presidents come and go and some of the reasons that wars have come about are now lost from memory or are obscured in our history texts.    A consistent aspect of war is that those who fight them are not those who arrange them. The soldiers and sailors who suffer loss of limb, scarred minds or forfeit their lives mostly come from the lower and middle rungs of our societal ladder. They are our sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters.    Once gone, it is the family who notices the empty chair at the family table while society at large knows not their name. Death has captured them and taken them forever from our midst. It has become personal and not a vague philosophical idea. The theme of Donne’s poem is that, though Death is irresistible, it has no cause to be proud. The human spirit and its hope for redemption is indomitable. This was the weekly poetry project for the week of May 27th, 2006.    (Summary by Robert Garrison)

  This collection of plays is a testament to Saki's (H.H. Munro's) wit and sincerity. 
  In "The Death Trap", a prince must make a decision to either die at the hands of his treasonous generals who want to put his relative on the throne, or set an unorthodox “death trap” for everyone involved; a scheme that turns loyalty into treachery and makes Dimitri’s fate a calculated act of statecraft, revealing Saki’s dark view of power, expediency, and the human cost of political stability. 
  In "Karl Ludwig’s Window," Kurt von Jagdstein, fearing disgrace after a duel gone wrong, returns to his home and contemplates ending his life by leaping from the same window once used in the same way by a tragic ancestor. Yet, amidst this tension, Kurt is in a constant state of witty retort to his family's questions and accusations. While his mother is questioning how they'll ever socially recover from this, he drinks to their health, knowing full well he won't be needing it--a dark satire at its finest. 
  "The Watched Pot" is a three-act comedic play written by Saki in collaboration with Charles Maude. It centers around the inhabitants of Briony manor either scheming or enacting the scheme of marrying the only inheritor of the estate, Trevor Bavvel, before his tyrant of a mother, Hortensia Bavvel, becomes aware of the covert usurpment of her power. The play humorously explores the pressure placed on everyone in the manor as various potential brides are paraded before him, while Trevor remains indifferent and hesitant. While, "the watched pot never boils," lighting a fire under these societal expectations of Edwardian society makes the resulting action of this play as dynamic as a mountain of gunpowder.
