A delightfully funny, fantastically inventive collection of twenty newly unearthed short stories by Sir Terry Pratchett, the award-winning and bestselling author of the phenomenally successful Discworld fantasy series. This special trove is a must-have for Pratchett fans of all ages. The audiobook is narrated by a stunning cast that includes David Tennant, Claire Foy, Paterson Joseph, Indira Varma, and more!
These rediscovered tales were written by Terry Pratchett under a pseudonym for British newspapers during the 1970s and 1980s. The stories have never been attributed to him until now, and might never have been found—were it not for the efforts of a few dedicated fans.
Though none of the short works are set in the Discworld, all are infused with Pratchett's trademark wit, satirical wisdom, and brilliant imagination, hinting at the magical universe he would go on to create.
Meet Og the inventor, the first caveman to cultivate fire, as he discovers the highs and lows of progress; haunt the Ministry of Nuisances with the defiant evicted ghosts of Pilgarlic Towers; visit Blackbury, a small market town with weird weather and an otherworldly visitor; and embark on a dangerous quest through time and space with hero Kron, which begins in the ancient city of Morpork.
Irresistibly entertaining, A Stroke of the Pen is an essential collection from the great Terry Pratchett, a “master storyteller” (A. S. Byatt) who “defies categorization” (The Times).

    The Travelling Salesman - James...

James Mason is a rogue, some would say a lovable rogue. He is a salesman of items that any guesthouse on the south coast of England can’t manage without, and he spends his weeks travelling along from one city to another, encouraging landladies to purchase his products. In the evenings he stays with one or other of his customers and very often ends up spanking them or their eighteen-year-old daughters.
Each week he stays in a central point and usually stays at the same guesthouse from Sunday night to Saturday morning. How does he choose the guesthouse? I hear you ask. Is it always by the quality of their accommodation? “Yeah, right!”
He rates the guesthouses he stays at in the following way.
    1. Is the landlady a single woman?
    2. Is he properly looked after when he stays there?
    3. Does the landlady have a daughter?
    4. Is the room cheap?
    5. Will the landlady write an invoice for twice what she charges him, for his expense claim?
    6. Does the landlady and/or her daughter like to be spanked?
    7. Is the account a small one?
When he is thinking with the part of his brain that he keeps in his pants, all of the above criteria are combined and then discarded if he discovers that number six is in place.
He just loves spanking naughty girls, and you will be amazed at how many he finds when he’s travelling.
He is thirty-two years old and still looks pretty good in the suit that he wears when he is selling. No tie nowadays, of course. He doesn't exercise at all but he is very fit, being on his feet most of the day and exercising on his back in the evenings, three times a week usually. He never apologises for his behaviour. Up to you if you approve or not. Most people don’t seem to care.

"For almost six decades Segal has quietly produced some of the best fiction and essays in American literature . . ." —The New York Times

Beloved New Yorker writer Lore Segal, at ninety-five years old, is a national treasure. Working at the height of her powers, in this story collection she turns her gimlet eye and compassionate humor on aging and life in the slow lane.

From the master of the short short comes a collection of sixteen new stories featuring old friends who have loved and lunched together for over forty years. These erudite, sharp-minded nonagenarians offer startling insights into friendship, family and aging.

Can the group organize a visit to one of their number in her new, and detested, assisted living situation? Is this a fabulous party with old friends, or a funeral reception? And does who was sleeping with whom, way back when, still matter?

In story after story, Segal's voice is always hilarious and urbane, heartbreaking and profound, keen and utterly unsentimental, as she tackles aging's affronts.
