Sinossi

"Food Smuggling" explores the hidden world of illegal food trade, revealing how ordinary items become contraband and fuel complex criminal networks. This true crime and history narrative uncovers the economic incentives, historical roots, and human impact of smuggling. For instance, trade restrictions and tariffs throughout history have driven individuals to risk illegal transportation, mirroring situations from the colonial sugar trade to modern embargoes. The book uniquely blends historical analysis with contemporary case studies. It examines specific smuggled goods—from European dairy products to luxury items like caviar—detailing smuggling routes, involved actors, and consequences for local economies and public health. Furthermore, it highlights how food smuggling, often an economic crime, is a symptom of systemic issues such as unequal resource access and flawed trade policies, reflecting the desperation of those seeking sustenance or profit. The book progresses by first defining food smuggling and differentiating it from legitimate trade. It then delves into case studies and concludes by assessing countermeasures employed by governments and international organizations. This approach offers readers a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics within global trade and cross-border law enforcement.

The rise of Great Zimbabwe was shaped by geography, economic opportunities, and social organization, allowing it to become one of Africa’s most influential civilizations. Emerging around the 9th century, the settlement developed into a thriving political and economic center by the 11th century, reaching its peak between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its growth was fueled by abundant natural resources, a strategic location, and participation in regional and international trade.
The Zimbabwean plateau, with its fertile soil and favorable climate, provided ideal conditions for agriculture. The Shona people, who founded Great Zimbabwe, cultivated sorghum and millet, which sustained the growing population. In addition to farming, cattle herding played a crucial role in the economy. Cattle were a measure of wealth and social status, serving as currency in trade and marriage negotiations. The presence of large herds further reinforced the power of the elite, who controlled access to grazing lands and water sources.
Beyond agriculture, Great Zimbabwe’s location made it a key player in long-distance trade. The city was situated between the goldfields of southern Africa and the coastal trade hubs of the Swahili city-states. Gold mining became a major economic activity, with miners extracting the metal from riverbeds and underground deposits. This gold was traded with merchants from Kilwa, Sofala, and other Swahili ports, where it was exchanged for luxury goods such as Persian ceramics, Chinese porcelain, and Indian textiles. The wealth generated from trade allowed Great Zimbabwe to expand, attracting artisans, traders, and skilled laborers.

A searing essay collection that explores displacement and loss, creativity and change, institutional power and progress.

Born in Korea, raised in the American South, and trying her best to survive British academia, SJ Kim probes her experiences as a writer, a scholar, and a daughter to confront the silences she finds in the world. With curiosity and sensitivity, she writes letters to the institutions that simultaneously support and fail her, intimate accounts of immigration, and interrogations of rising anti-Black and anti-Asian racism. She considers the silences between generations—especially within the Asian diaspora in the West—as she finds her way back to her own family during the pandemic lockdown.

Embracing the possibilities and impossibilities of language, Kim rejoices in the similes of Korean, her mother tongue, and draws inspiration from K-dramas and writers across cultures who sustain her. As borders close in and nations enter lockdown, the journey that Kim traces is fraught—and at once illuminates that the act of remaining present has its own power, allowing boundless hope.
