  As their lives entwine and they each grapple with their desires, ambitions and disappointments, Anton Chekhov's timeless play unfolds in a gripping tale of vanity, power and sacrifices made in the name of art.
  This refreshing, revitalised adaptation of The Seagull by Duncan Macmillan and Thomas Ostermeier was first performed at the Barbican Theatre, London, in 2025, directed by Ostermeier. The ensemble cast included Cate Blanchett, Tom Burke, Emma Corrin and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

In 2025, it received its European premiere at Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End, produced by Playful Productions, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Grain of Sand Productions, directed by RSC Co-Artistic Director Daniel Evans, and starring Ncuti Gatwa as Kit and Edward Bluemel as Will.

  Festus Claudius McKay was born in Sunny Ville, Jamaica on the 15th September 1890, He was the youngest son to parents who had gathered enough assets to secure them the right to vote. 
   
  As a boy he was fascinated by English Poetry and literature, although at 17 he took on work as an apprentice woodcutter for two years before becoming a police constable in the capital, Kingston.  In this mainly white and affluent town racism was rife and its nature awakened his political instincts and pursuit of social justice.  He soon returned home and published his first two poetry collections in 1912. 
   
  By the early 1920’s he had travelled extensively across the United States and parts of Europe and was recognised as a very talented poet and an essential founding component of the Harlem Renaissance.   
   
  As well as poetry he also wrote several novels and was a dedicated activist for social reform.  
   
  By the late 1930s he had developed a deep interest in Catholicism and several years later moved to Chicago as a teacher for a Catholic organisation. 
   
  By the mid 1940’s several illnesses has further debilitated his health. 
   
  Claude McKay died of heart failure on the 22nd May 1948.  He was 57.

Written in seven cantos, it tells the tale, in quintains, of a gentleman called Tibbets and his experience conversing with a phantom. This amusing "epic" takes us through their initial fear of each other, a fierce debate over the goings-on of the supernatural world, and finally, to a touching mutual admiration.

Drama is unfolding on a stage at the country estate of ailing ex-civil servant Pyotr Sorin. His nephew Konstantin Treplev is producing his new play in Sorin’s garden with aspiring actress Nina. In the audience are Konstantin’s mother, successful actress Irina Arkadina, and her lover, famous writer Boris Trigorin. Konstantin is hoping to impress, but his mother seems unsympathetic. Meanwhile, everyone’s unfulfilled hopes and desires begin to fester, resulting in disaster . . .  First premiered in 1896, The Seagull continues to be performed on stages around the world. It has been adapted numerous times for theater, musicals, opera, ballet, and film, including a 2018 production starring Annette Bening and Saoirse Ronan.
