LOOKING BEYOND HER POLITICAL SYMBOLISM TO CELEBRATE NOT ONLY WHO SHIRLEY CHISHOLM WAS BUT WHO SHE IS—A REVOLUTIONARY THINKER WITH MUCH TO TEACH US TODAY

In the midst of her groundbreaking twenty-year career in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm once declared, “Everyone—with the exception of the black woman herself—has been interpreting the black woman.” Edited and introduced by Zinga A. Fraser, Shirley Chisholm in Her Own Words gives readers a rare opportunity to engage with the congresswoman’s powerful ideas in her own voice.

Many Americans are familiar with Chisholm’s importance as the first Black woman in Congress and the first woman and African American to run for president with either major party. This long-overdue treatment of her work establishes Chisholm as an unparalleled public intellectual, powerful orator, and Black feminist both in her time and now. It introduces a new generation to one of the most impactful proponents of democracy in America.

“A timely, detailed, and inspiring book that helps maintain the intellectual legacy of Shirley Chisholm. The book reveals new dimensions of the congresswoman’s politics, activism, and spirit.”—Regina King, Academy Award–winning actor, and producer and star of Shirley

Why would most people endure unwanted or unsatisfying touch, rather than speak up for their own boundaries and desires? It’s a question with a myriad of answers – and one that Dr. Betty Martin has explored in her 40+ years as a hands-on practitioner, first as a chiropractor and later as a Somatic Sex Educator, Certified Surrogate Partner and Sacred Intimate. In her client sessions, she noticed a pattern wherein many clients would “allow” or go along with discomfort or unease rather than speak up for what they wanted or didn’t want. Betty discovered there was a major component missing for people -- the confidence that we have a choice about what is happening to us.
In her framework, “The Wheel of Consent®” Betty traces the fundamental roots of consent back to our childhood conditioning. As children, we are taught that to be “good” we must ignore our body’s discomfort and be compliant: to finish our food even if we’re full, to go to bed - even if we’re not tired, to let relatives hug and kiss us even if we don’t want to. We learn that our feelings don’t matter more than what is happening, and that we don’t have a choice but to go along, whether or not we want it.
As adults, this conditioning remains with us until we have an opportunity to unlearn it, which is why consent violations are often only called out after the violation has occurred - because we have not been taught or empowered to notice our boundaries, much less value or express our internal signals as the unwanted action is happening.
In this book, Betty guides the reader through the Wheel of Consent framework, and shares practices to help us recover the ability to notice what we want and set clear boundaries.

Are you tired of pretending to understand Hegel?
Do you feel personally attacked by German idealism?
Have you ever wondered if “sublation” is just a fancy word for “I have no idea what I’m saying”?
    Congratulations. You’ve found your people.
In Hegel’s Dialectic: Making Simple Ideas Complicated Since 1807, philosophy finally gets the sarcasm-drenched takedown it deserves. This brutally funny and weirdly educational guide walks you through Hegel’s greatest hits—from Phenomenology of Spirit to The Philosophy of Right—without requiring a PhD, a bottle of aspirin, or a séance to contact the Absolute Spirit.
    Inside, you’ll find:
    Chapter titles like
“The Dialectic for Dummies – Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis, Headache”
    and
“Philosophy of History – Congratulations Germany, You’re the Pinnacle of Human Development!”
Explainers that are actually funny, including:
Why “The true is the whole” means “Stop quoting me out of context.”
How to fake your way through a conversation about Hegel with confidence and zero comprehension.
A conclusion so revolutionary, it dares to suggest that clarity in philosophy... might actually be a good thing.
Whether you’re a philosophy student, a former philosophy student in recovery, or just someone who enjoys watching intellectual chaos unfold with style, this book is your antidote to academic despair.
Read it. Laugh. Learn something. Maybe.
And remember: if you're confused, you're probably doing it right.
🌀 "The most fun you can have with German idealism without crying."
🧠 "Hegel for people who want to understand him, but also want to live."
🕊 "Finally, a philosophy book that hates itself just the right amount."
