Sinossi

Cell Based Meat explores the groundbreaking science of producing meat directly from animal cells, offering a potential solution to the environmental challenges posed by traditional agriculture. This approach, also known as cultured meat, could revolutionize food systems by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and land degradation. The book examines the biological underpinnings of cell-based meat, detailing the processes of cell culture, scaffolding, and bioreactor design necessary to cultivate muscle and fat cells.

The book progresses from the history of tissue engineering to an assessment of the environmental impact of cell-based meat compared to conventional methods. It also delves into regulatory and ethical considerations, addressing concerns about animal welfare, food safety, and consumer acceptance.

What makes this book unique is its balanced approach, offering a detailed scientific overview while critically examining environmental and social implications, presenting data from scientific publications, industry reports, and interviews with experts.

The running joke in Europe for centuries was that anyone in a hurry to die should call the doctor. As far back as ancient Greece, physicians were notorious for administering painful and often fatal treatments—and charging for the privilege. For the most effective treatment, the ill and injured went to the women in their lives. This system lasted hundreds of years. It was gone in less than a century.

Contrary to the familiar story, medication did not improve during the Scientific Revolution. Yet somehow, between 1650 and 1740, the domestic female and the physician switched places in the cultural consciousness: she became the ineffective, potentially dangerous quack, he the knowledgeable, trustworthy expert. The professionals normalized the idea of paying them for what people already got at home without charge, laying the foundation for Big Pharma and today's global for-profit medication system. A revelatory history of medicine, The Apothecary's Wife challenges the myths of the triumph of science and instead uncovers the fascinating truth. Drawing on a vast body of archival material, Karen Bloom Gevirtz depicts the extraordinary cast of characters who brought about this transformation. She also explores domestic medicine's values in responses to modern health crises, such as the eradication of smallpox, and what benefits we can learn from these events.

    Welfare of Future Children The:...

Narrated by Rebecca Bennett, this open access practical guide to reproductive ethics navigates the complex subject of the policy around IVF treatment and disability screening based on the concerns around the welfare of future children. It focuses on 3 questions in order to examine these often complex philosophical issues:
    · Should we allow prospective parents using IVF to implant an embryo with a condition considered to be a disability?
    · Is routine screening for Down syndrome in pregnancy ethically acceptable, even if there is evidence that individuals may feel pressure to accept this screening?
    · Are we justified in attempting to evaluate the potential parenting ability of those trying to access fertility treatment (e.g. disabled people or individuals with past criminal convictions) and prevent access in some cases?
Rebecca Bennett walks the listener through different answers to these questions, exploring issues such as whether it is ever morally wrong to reproduce, whether we have a moral obligation to try and bring the ‘best’ children we can into existence and how we can assess the quality of future lives. There is, of course, no consensus about what the ‘right’ answers are to these questions, however answers are needed.
This area of policy and regulation is one that, Bennett argues, is heavily influenced by intuition, social norms and bias. The Welfare of Future Children invites us to question these norms and to come to a position on these issues that emphasises reason, transparency and accountability.

Ripple: An Intimate Exchange of Urgency and Hope Between An Ecologist and His Daughter is a narrative of letters written by an ecologist dad to his daughter upon her coming-of-age. Drawing upon his personal history, family anecdotes, and shared memories, Powers envisions a path for humanity's reintegration with nature, and a chance to save the life force that runs through all of us. A story of separation has long gripped the human race: that people are separate—with more advanced habitats, technologies, and values—from our natural surroundings and fellow creatures. We have been told this story for generations. But as Powers watches his daughter approach adulthood, with all of society's expectations, he knows that the story we pass down has to change. In Ripple, he tells a different tale, one of community and family, inner wisdom, and shared existence within a living planet.
