“Stories of immigration, culture-clash . . . and old-fashioned hard work are told through the history of Houston’s long-gone, but still-beloved restaurants.” —Yesterday’s America   With more than fourteen thousand eating establishments covering seventy different ethnic cuisines, Houston is a foodie town. But even in a place where eating out is a way of life and restaurants come and go, there were some iconic spots that earned a special place in the hearts and stomachs of locals. Maxim’s taught overnight millionaires how to handle meals that came with three forks. The Trader Vic’s at the Shamrock offered dedicated homebodies a chance for the exotic, and Sonny Look’s Sirloin Inn maintained the reputation of a city of steakhouses. From Alfred’s Delicatessen to Youngblood’s Fried Chicken, Paul and Christiane Galvani celebrate the stories and recipes of Houston’s fondly remembered tastemakers.  “In the book, the Galvanis share Houston’s history and love of food. They take the reader on the banks of the bayou when the city received its first inhabitants before time hopping from the Original Mexican Restaurant to The Original Kelley’s Steakhouse. Other stops include Alfred’s Delicatessen and the San Jacinto Inn.” —Houston Business Journal

Manage Your Diabetes Bundle, 2 in 1 Bundle: Reverse Diabetes and The Diabetes CodeDiabetes is a significant problem in the developed world and is especially prevalent among certain ethnic groups. Yet many people are not really sure what diabetes is, who gets it, and whether or not they are at risk. To explain it simply, diabetes means too much sugar in the blood. Diabetics need to take steps to control their blood sugar levels, something that is normally done automatically within the body. How this is done and to what extent it is done depends on the type of diabetes that is present. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Of the more than 30 million Americans with diabetes, 90% have type 2 diabetes, while the remainder has type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t handle insulin well or cells stop responding to it, causing blood sugar levels to become too high. Over time, if it isn’t treated, high blood sugar causes serious damage throughout the body, resulting in vision problems, skin infections, and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. This bundle will teach you everything you need to know about diabetes and how you can manage it. You will learn the risk factors and how to know if you have diabetes. You will also discover the right kinds of diet to follow plus treatments available. This 2 in 1 bundle includes the following audiobooks:1. This nineteenth-century American cookbook is a comprehensive guide to traditional American cooking by one of the era’s more prolific food writers.

Originally published in 1857, Miss Leslie’s New Cookery Book set a new standard in American cookbook publishing. This comprehensive recipe collection of over 650 pages with 1,000 recipes contains dishes ranging from American fried chicken and southern veal stew to continental favorites like Italian pork and West Indian fried bananas. Every recipe was tested by the author, and all were original to the book. Leslie was a marvelous food writer whose strongly stated opinions about cooking techniques and ingredients provided sensible advice to American cooks who had long suffered from the poor directions in continental cookbooks and from the differences in European kitchens and utensils. Her publisher proclaimed this “the most complete Cook Book in the world.”

This edition of Miss Leslie’s New Cookery Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1812.

The Food and Wine of France -...

In The Food and Wine of France, influential food writer Edward Behr investigates French cuisine and what it means, in encounters from Champagne to Provence. He tells the stories of French artisans and chefs who continue to work at the highest level. Many people in and out of France have noted for a long time the slow retreat of French cuisine, concerned that it is losing its important place in the country's culture and in the world culture of food. And yet, as Behr writes, good French food remains very, very delicious. No cuisine is better. The sensuousness is overt. French cooking is generous, both obvious and subtle, simple and complex, rustic and utterly refined. A lot of recent inventive food by comparison is wildly abstract and austere. In the tradition of great food writers, Behr seeks out the best of French food and wine. He shows not only that it is as relevant as ever, but he also challenges us to see that it might become the world's next cutting-edge cuisine. The Food and Wine of France is a remarkable journey of discovery. It is also an investigation into why classical French food is so extraordinarily delicious-and why it will endure.
