Thoroughly absurd and yet all-too-real, My Way to Canossa follows four journeys that re-imagine the Middle Ages amid the political and technological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
This isn't an historical novel. It's an exploration of how the present uses the past.

Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.
MATCHING'S EASY AT WAR: On that eventful night of the first shots and the first deaths Mr. Britling did not sleep until daylight had come. He sat writing at this pamphlet of his, which was to hail the last explosion and the ending of war.

How far would you go for greatness?Through immersive scenes, a full cast, sound effects, and more, bestselling author Anna Downes brings listeners into The Studio, an elite Los Angeles acting school whose cult-like leader, Marianna, promises to make students into unstoppable talents—at any cost. After years of seclusion, the once-celebrated child star Georgia Lane moves to Los Angeles, determined to make a comeback. But as bills pile up and auditions don’t, she realizes that beneath the glitzy facade of LA lies an unforgiving city. But things start looking up when Georgia meets Henry, an aspiring actor who sweeps her off her feet and offers to help with her career. He connects her with his agent and brings her to audit a class at The Studio, an elite acting group of which he’s a member. There, The Studio’s head teacher, Marianna (narrated by Orange Is the New Black star Yael Stone), takes a special interest in Georgia. As Georgia steps into the intense, ego-driven world of The Studio, she finds herself invigorated by its unconventional methods, which promise to unlock her full potential—while demanding much more in return. The more she commits to its ways, the more The Studio reveals itself as a battleground of ambition, jealousy, and psychological warfare. As the line blurs between the pursuit of art and the survival of the self, everything Georgia holds dear starts slipping away. Break Me Down is a testament to the power of art to heal, destroy, and ultimately transform. The audiobook includes a bonus conversation between Anna and some of the main cast members of Break Me Down, discussing the story and their experiences as actors.“Break Me Down isn’t your average audiobook—it’s dark, dazzling, and absolutely addictive. Anna Downes drags you backstage into a world of ambition, manipulation, and theatrical mind games…. I binged it in a day and loved every twisted minute.” —Sally Hepworth, bestselling author of Darling Girls“A whip-smart, razor-sharp look behind the glossy veneer of Hollywood, Break Me Down is the definition of bingeworthy: ingeniously plotted, wholly propulsive, and deliciously addictive. I was sucked in from the word go and couldn’t tear myself away! Juicy, dramatic, bold, and utterly original, Downes has crafted another masterpiece.” —May Cobb, bestselling author of The Hunting Wives “Immersive and chilling, Break Me Down blends the novel with the radio play to delicious effect—an absolute must for audio addicts everywhere.” —Candice Fox, award-winning author of Crimson Lake, Redemption Point, Gone By Midnight, and Gathering DarkAn audio original from Macmillan Audio.

    Rudyard Kipling

Joseph Rudyard Kipling was born in Mumbai, India on 30th December 1865.

As was the custom in those days, he and his sister were sent back to England when he was 5. The ill-treatment and cruelty by the Portsmouth couple they boarded with Kipling said contributed to the onset of his literary life.

At 16 he returned to India to work on a local paper where he was soon contributing and writing. It also exposed him to the issues of identity and national allegiance which pervade much of his work.

In 1886, his ‘Departmental Ditties’, collection of verse appeared in print followed by 39 short stories for his newspaper over only 8 months. These were then published as ‘Plain Tales from the Hills’, shortly after his 22nd birthday.

He continued his prolific pace of writing before being dismissed in a dispute and, taking his pay-off and the profits from the sale of some publishing rights, decided to return to London, travelling via Rangoon, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States, all the while writing articles, and arriving at Liverpool in October 1889.

Over the next two years he saw further works published as books and in magazines, as well as a nervous breakdown for which he was prescribed a sea voyage, to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India.

Happier times came with marriage to Caroline Starr Balestier in January 1892. The honeymoon began in Vermont and ended in Yokahama where they heard their bank had failed. They returned to Vermont and settled. Caroline was now pregnant and he was planning the ‘Jungle Books’.

A failed arbitration between the US and England resulted in an argument between Caroline’s brother and Kipling, and then his arrest. At the hearing he was mortified by the exposure of his private life and after settling the matter they returned to England and life in Torquay. ‘Kim’ was published in 1902, and ‘Just So Stories for Little Children’, a year later.

In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature with the citation “in consideration of the power of observation, originality of imagination, virility of ideas and remarkable talent for narration which characterise the creations of this world-famous author”.

When the Great War erupted, he scorned those who refused conscription. His son enlisted and was killed at the Battle of Loos in September 1915, at 18, an exploding shell had ripped his face apart. This death inspired Kipling’s writing thereafter, but the tragedy broke his life and by 1930 his prolific pen had almost ceased.

Rudyard Kipling died on 18th January 1936 from a perforated duodenal ulcer. He was 70. His ashes are buried at Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey.

In the Maltese Cat Kipling returns once more to India and the British Empire. A polo match is being played. The fierce competitive instincts of two social classes are fighting for dominance. All told through the voice of the Maltese Cat, the most cunning of the horses.

A complex family drama with a Manhattan family court judge at its center.

I Don't Know How to Tell You This focuses on Judge Rachel Sugarman and her life both inside and outside the courtroom. Rachel is part of a close Jewish family whose lives are marked by significant emotional challenges, including the painful recognition that her beloved husband is slowly being diminished by memory loss, and the past trauma of her mother-in-law, a prickly Holocaust survivor who, in old age, continues to struggle with her grief.

Rachel's career as a judge and the power she wields in her courtroom offer an intimate look at a woman navigating what is still, in the twenty-first century, a profession most often dominated by men. The novel explores the very topical issues of child and spousal abuse, which color the dark undercurrent of the courtroom scenes. And though it reflects serious issues, there is very clearly a pitch-black comic sensibility at work throughout the novel. By turns sad and touching and quirkily humorous, I Don't Know How To Tell You This is vintage Marian Thurm.
