A concise, elegant, and thought-provoking exploration of the mystery of consciousness and the functioning of the brain.Despite decades of research, remarkable imagery, and insights from a range of scientific and medical disciplines, the human brain remains largely unexplored. Consciousness has eluded explanation.Nineteen Ways of Looking at Consciousness offers a brilliant overview of the state of modern consciousness research in twenty brief, revealing chapters. Neuroscientist and author Patrick House describes complex concepts in accessible terms, weaving brain science, technology, gaming, analogy, and philosophy into a tapestry that illuminates how the brain works and what enables consciousness. This remarkable book fosters a sense of mystery and wonder about the strangeness of the relationship between our inner selves and our environment.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

From Big Bang to Black Holes -...

The origins of the universe are a subject of profound scientific interest and philosophical debate. The most widely accepted explanation for the birth of the cosmos is the Big Bang Theory. According to this theory, the universe began as an incredibly hot, dense point around 13.8 billion years ago. This singularity contained all of the matter and energy that would eventually form stars, galaxies, planets, and everything else that makes up the cosmos.
The event itself wasn’t an explosion in the traditional sense but a rapid expansion of space itself. Immediately following the Big Bang, the universe began to expand exponentially, a process known as cosmic inflation. During this phase, the universe grew from smaller than the size of an atom to a vast, nearly infinite expanse in an instant. The rapid expansion allowed matter and energy to cool, leading to the formation of elementary particles such as quarks, electrons, and neutrinos. As the universe continued to expand and cool, quarks combined to form protons and neutrons, which eventually led to the creation of simple atomic nuclei like hydrogen and helium.
After hundreds of thousands of years, the universe cooled enough for electrons to combine with protons and form neutral hydrogen atoms. This allowed light to travel freely, marking the beginning of what is known as the "cosmic dark ages." During this time, the universe was nearly invisible to the human eye, as light was scattered by free electrons. Eventually, gravity began to take hold, pulling matter together to form the first stars and galaxies.

“Mystic Matter – The Strangest Stuff in Space” is an awe-inspiring deep dive into the bizarre and bewildering materials that make up our universe. This 3-in-1 collection takes you far beyond everyday matter into the heart of cosmic mystery, exploring the strangest and most elusive elements of existence. Through Mystical Matter, you’ll unravel the secrets of dark matter, antimatter, and strange particles that challenge the very rules of classical physics. Why can’t we see dark matter? What happens when antimatter collides with matter? These questions and more are explored in ways both captivating and understandable.
In Cosmic Alchemy, you’ll journey through the lifecycle of stars, watching them forge the elements in massive furnaces before dying in dramatic explosions that scatter their atomic creations across the cosmos. This book illuminates how the universe transforms—from hydrogen to gold—and reveals the mystical science behind the periodic table written in the stars.
Finally, The Quantum Darkness plunges into the smallest scales of existence, where particles pop in and out of reality and the vacuum of space is anything but empty. You’ll encounter quantum fluctuations, strange forces, and the very limits of our scientific understanding.
Whether you're a casual space enthusiast or a seasoned science lover, this book provides a thrilling, accessible, and mind-expanding tour of the most puzzling phenomena in modern astrophysics. Discover how the invisible shapes the visible, how stars play alchemist, and how our universe is woven together by forces still beyond our grasp. With rich insights and vivid explanations, Mystic Matter invites you to explore a universe far stranger—and more wondrous—than fiction.
