Technocracy is a concept that has evolved over time, yet its core principles remain focused on the idea that governance should be driven by scientific knowledge and technical expertise rather than political ideologies or populist sentiments. The term "technocracy" was first introduced in the early 20th century by engineers and economists who believed that the efficient management of resources and societal development could only be achieved through the application of scientific principles. Technocrats argued that political leaders, often with little to no understanding of complex systems, were ill-equipped to make decisions that could optimize society’s functioning, particularly in times of rapid industrialization and technological advancement.
The origins of technocracy can be traced back to the industrial revolution, when technological innovations began reshaping economies and societies. However, the movement gained significant traction in the early 1930s during the Great Depression, a period of economic turmoil that called into question traditional governance models. During this time, scholars like Howard Scott and engineers from the Technocratic Movement in the United States called for the establishment of a technocratic society where engineers, scientists, and other experts would manage the economy based on data-driven decision-making rather than political influence. They believed that such a system would eliminate inefficiencies, social inequalities, and the corruption they associated with political governance.

Dedicated to the voices that refuse to be lost.
Deep in the heart of an Australian forest, where golden sunlight filters through the trees, lives Renny, a regent honeyeater with feathers as dazzling as the morning sun. But Renny has a problem—he cannot sing.
All the other birds have their own beautiful songs. The bellbirds chime like tiny silver bells, the kookaburras fill the air with laughter, and the wise old lyrebird can copy any sound he hears. But no matter how hard Renny tries, his song is missing.
Determined to find it, Renny sets off on a journey through the forest. He listens, he learns, and he searches for the music that once belonged to birds like him. But where do lost songs go?
Then, Renny meets Tilly, an elderly regent honeyeater who remembers things others have forgotten. She shares a secret—a whisper of something long ago, a sound carried on the wind.
And in that moment, everything begins to change.

When William McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Theodore Roosevelt was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency.
As one of the most influential men of the 20th century, there is no shortage of adjectives to use when describing Woodrow Wilson’s two terms as president of the United States. Wilson was a pioneer of the Progressive movement both before and during his presidency, becoming a populist champion a generation before Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. He ran for reelection by touting his neutrality during World War I, only to lead his nation into the war and become the architect of a world body that would lead to greater inter-connection among nations. Today Wilson is best remembered for his Fourteen Points, one of the most forceful arguments for an idealistic foreign policy in American history.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt might be America’s greatest 20th century president, but there’s no question that he was the most unique. A well-connected relative of Theodore Roosevelt, FDR was groomed for greatness until he was struck down by what was widely believed to be polio at the time. Nevertheless, he persevered, rising through New York politics to reach the White House just as the country faced its greatest challenge since the Civil War. For over a decade, Roosevelt threw everything he had at the Great Depression, and then threw everything the country had at the Axis powers during World War II. Ultimately, he succumbed to illness in the middle of his fourth term, just before the Allies won the war.
