Set in the early 17th century, the story follows young d'Artagnan, who travels to Paris with dreams of becoming a musketeer. He soon befriends three musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—and together, they become involved in the political intrigues and conflicts between the royalists and the Cardinalists, supporters of Cardinal Richelieu. The novel is famous for its action, wit, and complex characters, and it has been adapted into numerous films, plays, and other media.

  Martin Eden

  The phrase ‘this book will change your life’ has become one of the clichés of the publishing world but ‘Martin Eden’ is certainly a novel that merits that observation. 
  Set in turn of the century San Francisco, Jack London’s semi-autobiographical narrative tells of working class sailor Eden’s struggle to elevate himself to a level of society wherein, he believes, resides the intellect and culture he craves. One of the reasons for this endeavour is Ruth Morse, with whom he has fallen in love, and whose bourgeois family make a union between them impossible until he obtains an equality of wealth and status. 
  However, Martin’s inexorable and painful quest changes him and he is as uncompromising in his new found beliefs as London is in his telling of the tale. Success comes at the price of disillusion and when the publishers and middle-class are finally at his feet Martin already begrudges them. Having achieved his ambition by appreciation and comprehension of  the works of evolutionist Herbert Spencer, Martin is now at the mercy of one of the tenets of this creed: "the survival of the fittest." Tasting the fruit of the tree the successful writer has nothing but contempt for the values of the class he has reached and is unfit for his place. Can he turn back despite the fact he has not only lost his faith in God but also his belief in his fellow men?

  The Kiss A Short Story Trilogy

  Anton Chekhov, Guy de Maupassant, Kate Chopin. These three names thrill the literary world as well as our own.  They have gravitas, they have knowledge, experience and they have the literary style and panache to seduce our imagined world. 
   
  Each has written a short story on pleasured lips placed on another’s flesh. 
   
  For Chekhov it was a kiss in a darkened room that happened by mistake.  Who was she? 
   
  For Chopin it was a kiss that almost derailed a hoped-for marriage proposal.  Why did he do that?  
   
  For de Maupassant it was a niece seeking advice from her Aunt on when to kiss and whom.  And did she? 
   
  Add to this our own experiences of ‘the kiss’.  A kiss to welcome a friend, the loving kiss for our child, our parents, the passionate kiss to a lover.   
   
  These experiences are individual to each of us but perhaps shape a thought or recall a memory when our three authors relate their own stories into our senses.

  The Connoisseur

  Perceval Gibbon

  Perceval Gibbon was born on the 4th November 1879 in Trelech, Carmarthenshire in Wales and, unusually, was partly educated at the Moravian School, in Koenigsfeld, Baden, Germany.  
   
  Gibbon’s early career was as a merchant seaman during which he travelled to Europe, Africa, and the Americas.  These early experiences were later reflected in his literary works. 
   
  He is perhaps best known for his 1912 novel ‘Margaret Harding’ but began his literary career as a poet with ‘African Items’ in 1903 followed quickly by two novels and then the first collection of his short stories in 1905: ‘Vrouw Grobelaar's Leading Cases’.  His short stories were much admired, and many contained cutting and ironic endings. 
   
  As a journalist he wrote for several newspapers including for the Rand Daily Mail and in the closing stages of the Boer War he wrote for the Natal Witness.  
   
  As the First World War began its titanic struggle across Europe Gibbon joined British Intelligence and was also a war correspondent with the Italian Army from 1917-1918.  
   
  By the end of the War he had advanced to the rank of Major in the British Royal Marines. 
   
  Perceval Gibbon died on the 30th May 1926.
