Sinossi

Fuel Cells: Revolutionizing Clean Transportation and Energy explores the potential of fuel cell technology to transform our energy landscape. The book examines how these devices, relying on electrochemical processes, could provide clean energy for transportation and stationary power generation. A key focus is on the environmental benefits, such as drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. Did you know that fuel cells can power everything from cars and buses to microgrids and backup power systems?

The book begins with the fundamental principles of fuel cell operation and progresses through various applications, including transportation and stationary power. It delves into economic and environmental considerations, weighing the costs and benefits of fuel cell technology, and concludes with a discussion of future trends and challenges, such as hydrogen storage.

By presenting performance data and real-world case studies, the book offers a balanced, data-driven assessment, avoiding hype and focusing on a realistic picture of the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for sustainable energy and clean transportation.

From cells in our bodies to measuring the universe, big numbers are everywhere

We all know that numbers go on forever, that you could spend your life counting and never reach the end of the line, so there can’t be such a thing as a ‘biggest number’. Or can there?

To find out, David Darling and Agnijo Banerjee embark on an epic quest, revealing the answers to questions like: are there more grains of sand on Earth or stars in the universe? Is there enough paper on Earth to write out the digits of a googolplex? And what is a googolplex?

    Then things get serious.

Enter the strange realm between the finite and the infinite, and float through a universe where the rules we cling to no longer apply. Encounter the highest number computable, infinite kinds of infinity and ask whether one infinity can be greater than another. At every turn, a cast of wild and wonderful characters threatens the status quo with their ideas, and each time the numbers get larger.

Artificial intelligence has revolutionized industries by identifying patterns and making predictions from vast amounts of data. However, the true power of AI lies not just in recognizing correlations but in understanding causation—the fundamental "why" behind events and outcomes.
Causal Intelligence provides a comprehensive exploration of how causal inference principles can transform AI systems from mere pattern detectors into tools capable of reasoning, decision-making, and ethical intervention. Combining the rigor of causal theory with the practicalities of modern AI, this book bridges the gap between two evolving fields to unlock groundbreaking applications in healthcare, finance, public policy, and beyond.
Whether you’re a data scientist, AI practitioner, researcher, or curious technologist, this book will empower you to:Grasp the fundamental differences between correlation and causation.Understand key causal inference frameworks, including Pearl's Causal Hierarchy and Rubin's Causal Model.Discover techniques for identifying causal relationships in complex data.Learn how to integrate causal reasoning into machine learning and AI systems.Explore real-world applications and case studies where causality transforms outcomes.Address fairness and ethics in AI using a causal perspective.
Written in an accessible yet rigorous style, Causal Intelligence serves as a roadmap for the next generation of AI systems—ones that don’t just predict the future but understand it, shape it, and improve it. Dive into the emerging world of causal AI and discover how it’s poised to redefine data-driven decision-making for the better.

Following his retirement from academic life, renowned naturalist and writer Whit Gibbons and his family purchased a tract of abandoned farmland where the South Carolina piedmont meets the coastal plain. Described as backcountry scrubland, it was originally envisioned as a family retreat, but soon the property became Gibbons's outdoor learning laboratory where he was often aided by his four grandchildren, along with a host of enthusiastic visitors.

Inspired by nature's power to excite, educate, and provide a sense of place in the world, Gibbons invites listeners to learn about their surrounding environments. Peppered throughout with colorful personal anecdotes and told with Gibbons's affable style and wit, Salleyland: Wildlife Adventures in Swamps, Sandhills, and Forests is more than a personal memoir or a record of place. Rather, it is an exercise in learning about a patch of nature, thereby reminding us to open our eyes to the complexity and wonder of the natural world.

With Gibbons's guidance and encouragement, listeners will learn to embrace their inner scientists, equipped with the knowledge and encouragement to venture beyond their own front doors, ready to discover the secrets of their habitat, regardless of where they live.

We may think of "globalism" as a recent development but its origins date back to the fifteenth century and beyond, when seafarers pioneered routes across the oceans with the objectives of exploration, trade, and profit. These voyages only became possible after certain technical innovations—improvements in ship design, compasses, and mapping—enabled navigation across unprecedented distances. The mariners' embarkation points were the vibrant ports of the West—Venice, Amsterdam, Lisbon—and their destinations the exotic ports of the East—Malacca, Goa, Bombay—where they tracked down the elusive spices, so much in demand by Western palates.

This development of maritime communication brought benefits apart from culinary delights: the spread of ideas on art, literature, and science. But it was not necessarily beneficial for everyone concerned: colonial ambitions were often disastrous for local populations, who were frequently exploited as slave plantation labor.

This wide-ranging account of a fascinating period of global history uses original maps and contemporary artists' views to tell the story of how each port developed individually while also encouraging us to consider contrasting points of view of the benefits and the damages of the maritime spice trade.

In Search of Darkness - The...

Dark matter is one of the greatest mysteries in the universe. Despite being invisible and undetectable by traditional means, it accounts for a significant portion of the universe’s mass. It has been a subject of scientific inquiry for over a century, and yet, it remains largely elusive. The term "dark matter" was first coined in the 1930s by astronomer Fritz Zwicky when he observed that galaxies in clusters were moving much faster than expected based on the visible matter they contained. Zwicky hypothesized that there must be some unseen mass, which he referred to as "dark matter," to explain the extra gravitational pull. This idea was revolutionary at the time, but it took decades for the concept of dark matter to gain widespread acceptance in the scientific community.
In the following years, astronomers and physicists continued to gather indirect evidence for dark matter’s existence. The observation of galaxy rotation curves provided another compelling clue. Galaxies, such as our Milky Way, were found to rotate faster at their outer edges than could be explained by the visible matter alone. If only the mass of the stars and gas were considered, the galaxies would not be able to maintain their rotation speeds without breaking apart. However, the additional gravitational influence of dark matter seemed to explain this discrepancy, pointing to its presence.
Despite this evidence, scientists still have no direct way to detect dark matter. It does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it invisible to traditional telescopes and detectors. The most that can be done is to observe its effects on visible matter, radiation, and gravitational forces. The hunt for dark matter has since become a driving force in astrophysics and particle physics, with scientists developing new methods and tools to try and detect it.
