Sinossi

Consumer Rights Explained offers crucial insights into your legal protections against consumer fraud, deceptive advertising, and product liability, empowering you to navigate the marketplace confidently. Did you know that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) provide essential data on the prevalence of scams and deceptive practices? Understanding these consumer protection laws is vital for avoiding exploitation and making informed decisions.

The book explores the evolution of consumer rights, from early regulations to modern statutes, touching on basic contract and tort law. It begins by defining key terms and fundamental rights, then delves into specific types of fraud like identity theft and online scams, followed by discussions on product defects and misleading advertising tactics, and concluding with practical advice for seeking legal recourse.

This approach combines legal analysis with actionable steps, making complex concepts accessible and relevant to a general audience interested in business and politics.

A fascinating examination of the rapid concentration of global capital, with chapters that focus on China and Russia.

In Titans of Capital, Peter Phillips, a political sociologist, poses three key research questions: To what extent do the wealthy influence—or even dominate—decision making that affects all of us in society? Who are the most powerful people? And how does the accumulation of capital work?

Networks of wealthy individuals have evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Titans of Capital shows how the financial investments of transnational elites threaten human rights and the future of the planet. Phillips warns that while continued concentration of global capital increases the profits enjoyed by the global economy's "Titans,", it also increases global inequality, starvation, and civil unrest, threatening the lives of the hundreds of millions of people living in extreme poverty. It is imperative to ask how we can reverse the concentration of Titan wealth and revitalize grassroots democracy unbridled by extreme wealth. Identifying 117 global Titans by name and exposing the networks and interests that unite them provides listeners opposed to militarism and committed to economic equality with crucial tools to directly engage the power elite who endanger life on earth.

In the years after the Easter Rising of 1916 in Ireland, a new independence movement had emerged, and in 1918-19 the political party Sinn Féin and its paramilitary partner, the Irish Republican Army, began a political struggle and an armed uprising against British rule. By 1922 the United Kingdom had lost a very substantial portion of its territory, as the Irish Free State came into being amid a brutal civil war. At the same time Ireland was partitioned and a new, unionist government was established in what was now Northern Ireland.

It is widely accepted that political discourse in recent years has become more openly racist and more accepting of wildly implausible conspiracy theories. Dogwhistles and Figleaves explores ways in which such changes—both of which defied previously settled norms of political speech—have been brought about. Jennifer Saul shows that two linguistic devices, dogwhistles and figleaves, have played a crucial role. Some dogwhistles (such as "88", used by Nazis online to mean "Heil Hitler") serve to disguise messages that would otherwise be rejected as unacceptable, allowing them to be transmitted surreptitiously. Other dogwhistles (like the 1988 "Willie Horton" ad) work by influencing people in ways that they are not aware of, and which they would likely reject were they aware. Figleaves (such as "just asking questions") take messages that could easily be recognized as unacceptable, and provide just enough cover that people become more willing to accept them. Saul argues that these devices are important for the spread of racist discourse. She also shows how they contribute to the transmission of norm-violating discourse more generally, focusing on the case of wildly implausible conspiracist speech. This book is the first full-length exploration of dogwhistles and figleaves. It offers an illuminating and disturbing view of the workings of contemporary political discourse.

The Victorians - A Very Short...

The Victorian period may have come to an end over 120 years ago, but the Victorians continue to be a vital presence in the modern world. Contemporary Britain is still in large part Victorian in its transport networks, sewage systems, streets, and houses. Victorian cultural legacies, especially in art, science, and literature, are still celebrated. Much mythologized, inexhaustibly controversial, the Victorians are an inescapable reference point for understanding the modern histories not just of Britain and its empire, but of the world.

In The Victorians: A Very Short Introduction Martin Hewitt offers a guide through the thickets of judgement and debate which have grown around the period and its people, to offer a historical overview of the Victorians and their legacies. Beyond ideology, what was Victorian Britain actually like DS and in particular, what was distinctive about it? Who were the Victorians DS not just the eminent few, but the population as a whole? And finally, how far and with what results did the Victorians and their culture spread across the globe?

In answering these questions, Hewitt cautions against some long-held orthodoxies, throws a light on some less well-known aspects of the period, and urges the importance of understanding the Victorians on their own terms if we are to effectively engage with their legacies.
