Sinossi

The Vision of Ezra is a similar work to the Greek Apocalypse of Ezra, however, only survives in Latin manuscripts dating to the 11th through 13th centuries. The Vision is unique among the surviving Apocalypses of Ezra due to its significant Egyptian influence. The Vision may have started as a Christian reworking of an old Egyptian description of the underworld, as it references a lot of old Egyptian underworld iconography. In the Vision, Ezra is taken on a tour of the underworld by messengers of the underworld (Tartarus) and then is taken to heaven where he begs for mercy for those in the underworld. This is similar to the Greek Apocalypse, except in the Apocalypse, Ezra is first taken to the Sky, where he meets God, and then God sends him to the underworld with the messengers from the sky to guide and protect him. The Greek Apocalypse appears to be an attempt to “correct” the text, as “messengers of Tartarus” could be read as either “messengers from the underworld,” or “messengers from the god of the underworld.” In the 8th century BC, the ancient Greek poet Hesiod wrote in his Theogony, that Tartarus was the third oldest god, coming into existence after Chaos (creation) and Ge (Earth). He further described Tartarus as being as far beneath Hades, as the Earth was beneath the sky. He described the distance from the Sky to the Earth, the Earth to Hades, and Hades to Tartarus as being the distance it would take for an anvil to fall for one week. Therefore, in the Greek mindset of the early Christian era, the Vision would have been read as having messengers sent from either the deepest part of the underworld, or the leader of that place, which would have been the devil. As this is contrary to Orthodox teachings, in which the messengers work for God, and the demons work for the devil, it would have needed to be theologically corrected if it was to circulate in the Byzantine Empire. The Vision itself appears to have been written by a Coptic Christian or Gnostic, as the underworld is largely inspired by the ancient Egyptian underworld. There are several unique underworld elements in the Vision that support a Coptic origin, including dogs attacking the dead, two great lions, and an immense worm, all at the western horizon. While dogs devouring corpses is not unique to Egypt, it was a significant concern in Egypt. Dogs were so closely associated with the dead that the embalming god Anubis was pictured with a jackal’s head. The original point of embalming the dead was to stop dogs and jackals from eating the dead."

If the past few years have taught us anything, it's that by and large the church has failed women. From sexual abuse scandals involving high-profile pastors, to decades-long systemic cover-ups of sexual harassment and mistreatment, to harmful theology that has driven women to leave the church and find community elsewhere, it's clear that something is broken. If we want to fix it, it's time we start listening.

Drawing on new, firsthand research and in-depth interviews, Safe Church allows women to voice the pain they have suffered at the hands of insecure leaders who were often unaware of how their words, actions, and attitudes were harming their sisters in Christ. With practical advice on how to create more equity and less sexism and abuse in the church, this honest look at how misogyny masquerades as biblical truth is a vital resource for pastors, church leaders, and anyone who wants to make a meaningful difference in their own Christian community.

The Gift of Thorns Audio Study dives deep into some of the hardest questions we wrestle with in the war for our wants:
    - What do God's desires and Satan's desires have to do with us?- Which desires did God place in our hearts at creation and why?- What can we do when we start losing our desire for God?- Why do some unwanted desires persist after we start following Christ?- Is it possible to want a good thing too much?- How can we discern which desires to crucify and which to nurture?
This video study provides examples of the theme of "thorns" that pops up over and over throughout the Bible. How will these thorns be, in the words of God, "for you" (Gen. 3:18)? A world where we do not get all that we want is the greatest gift ever. Join A. J. Swoboda in a personal exploration of the human problem, What do I do with my desire?

In a world of war, terrorism, and other geopolitical threats to global stability, how should committed Christians honor Jesus Christ and his Word? How should Christians think and act when it comes to church-state relations, the preservation of order, the practice of just peacemaking, and the use of coercive force?
In this volume in IVP Academic's Spectrum series, four contributors—experts in Christian ethics, political philosophy, and international affairs—offer the best of current Christian thinking on issues of war and peace. They present four distinct views:

    - Eric Patterson, just war view
    - Myles Werntz, nonviolence view
    - A. J. Nolte, Christian realist view
    - Meic Pearse, church historical view
Each contributor makes a case for his own view and responds to the others, highlighting complexities and real-world implications of the various perspectives. Edited and with an introduction and conclusion by the philosopher Paul Copan, this book provides a helpful orientation to the key positions today.
Spectrum Multiview Books offer a range of viewpoints on contested topics within Christianity, giving contributors the opportunity to present their position and also respond to others in this dynamic publishing format.

"The ministry of the Holy Spirit is not a luxury; it is an absolute necessity," writes celebrated author and respected pastor Warren Wiersbe. In his first of two books covering Acts, Be Dynamic focuses on Peter's ministry, mostly in Israel and centered in Jerusalem. Through explaining Luke's record of the Gospel's advancement and church expansion, Wiersbe opens the door to understanding the work of the church today.
Using hard-hitting quotes from recognized names like St. Augustine and John Bunyan, Wiersbe proves himself as a well-read author and gifted writer. The depth of his study is astounding, yet the accessibility of his text for every age group is evident as well. He proves what Luke intended-for Acts to be interpreted not as the apostles' glorious acts, but as the life-changing acts of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit lives in believers today, the same God calls followers to expand His church, and the same basic problems still arise within the church, but the same power available then is still available now to change the nations.
