Sinossi

The Book of Micah is generally considered one of the older surviving books of the Israelite Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was compiled, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Micah was written by a prophet called Micah sometime between 737 and 698 BCE, who was most likely from the town of Moresheth in the Kingdom of Judah or the city-state of Gath, in the modern Palestinian West Bank. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd century BC, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite gods, as well as statues of Yahweh, the God the Jews and Samaritans would later worship. While the Book of Micah is accepted by many as dating to the 8th century BCE, the oldest fragments of it to survive to the present are Hebrew fragments of the Sheneim Asar found among the Dead Sea Scrolls written in the Aramaic script, dating to the Hasmonean era, and fragments of the Dōdeka dating to the same era. The Dōdeka’s fragments are quite similar to the later copies of Amos in the Septuagint manuscripts, and the Hebrew fragments found within the Dead Sea Scrolls are generally the same as the Aleppo Codex’s Amos, which shows the surviving texts have been copied accurately since around 100 BCE.All versions of the Book of Micah include strange text that are accepted as relics of ancient spelling errors. Most of these appear to have originated in a Demotic Egyptian translation that all modern versions of Micah descend from. There are a few Demotic Egyptian texts, such as Papyrus Amherst 63, which include polytheistic Israelite psalms dating to between the 7th and 3rd century BC. During and after the Assyrian conquest of Samaria, and the Babylonian conquest of Judah, Israelites fled to Egypt, as well as the Carthage and other countries across the Mediterranean. The most obvious of these spelling errors is the reference to the daughters of Anat in chapter 1.

In Heaven, Hell, and Hope, Chris Kugler presents a thorough exploration of "personal eschatology," addressing the complex theological and biblical questions about the eternal fate of human beings. While Scripture suggests the possibility of eternal loss, Kugler argues that its most relevant texts are less definitive than commonly thought.

Kugler contends that a nuanced picture is called for when one considers how theology uses the Bible to develop doctrine. He presents the problems, possibilities, and prospects of the three major views on personal eschatology: damnationism, annihilationism, and universalism.

Heaven, Hell, and Hope is a vital resource for those teaching and preaching on personal eschatology. Designed for classroom use or small-group study, Kugler's analysis will benefit professors, students, pastors, and thoughtful lay audiences.

Macaulay's review essay on Frederick the Great of Prussia is found in vol. iii of his Critical and Historical Essays, and concentrates primarily on the ways in which he built Prussia up into a major military power. Though it's impossible to read the essay without thinking ahead to the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 and the two world wars of the twentieth century, Macaulay of course only carries Frederick roughly up to the end of the Seven Years War (1763).
