Sinossi

Not far south of Rome are the Castelli Romani, seventeen small hill-towns of beautiful, undiscovered charm in Lazio, hill-towns which have everything Rome does, but on a smaller, more humane scale. Love Among the Castelli Romani: A Midlife Crisis for Two recounts the authors’ two-year adventure in the area. Revealing the nature, mythology, history, culture, food, and people of four of the hill-towns—Albano, Castel Gandolfo, Frascati, and Nemi—they introduce the reader to the towns and the distinctly Italian life there, during the escapades of their midlife rediscovery of their love and the joy of the simple life.
Reading Rome through the Castelli Romani, and the Castelli Romani through Rome, the book is part travel memoir, part anthology of Latin and English literature, part biography of a marriage, part lyric meditation on midlife, all while our authors learn Italian, explore two crater lakes, eat and drink local food and wine, make friends, survive Covid, and unlock the unknown pleasures of an Italy just outside the known pleasures of Rome itself. The first English language treatment of the area in over one hundred years, Love Among the Castelli Romani is a Grand Tour of an area Roman emperors, medieval churchmen, renaissance aristocrats, and modern fortunates have all called home as they have escaped the heat and busyness of Rome in search of a cooler, greener, quieter side of Italian life. The book is for the real or armchair traveler ready for a new experience of Italy.

The war between the protestant Netherlands, mostly led by William of Orange, and Catholic Spain, was one of the marks in Dutch history. This war has determined the beliefs of many people who now live about the three rivers that go through the country: Most of the people north of the rivers are protestant, and most of the believers below them (even throughout Belgium as well) are Catholic. This is no coincidence.
The war in the 1600s has become a symbol of Dutch resistance, independence, and the royal family (of Orange). In that sense, traditions date back hundreds of years, some them that have their roots in this century. Learn more about what caused the 80 years of war between these two countries, how France was involved, and how it helped form the boundaries and borders of those countries today.

Farley Mowat's youth was charmed and hilarious, and unbelievably free in its access to unspoiled nature through bird-banding expeditions and overnight outings in the dead of winter. The author writes of sleeping in haystacks for survival, and other adventures, with equal shares of Booth Tarkington and Jack London. He also brings back Mutt, the famous hero-dog of his classic The Dog Who Wouldn't Be, and his pet owl Wol, hero of Owls in the Family. The tale of an outrageous and clever boy, Born Naked takes its place as the foundation of the Farley Mowat canon.

No one walks around the Buddhist holy places in India. Not today. They travel by bus with good reason. The Buddha’s homeland is now one of the most desperately overcrowded and poverty ridden places on the planet. It is also very dangerous. But Nick Scott and Ajahn Sucitto decided to do just that: to walk for six months and for over one thousand miles, sleeping out at night and living on alms food, just as the Buddha would have done.
“Armchair pilgrims take note! This book will provide blisters, backaches, frights, absurd laughter and all night meditation. Result? Exhaustion tinged with grace. In the age of the pop-epiphany, Rude Awakenings is a throwback to what began it all: the slow road to enlightenment. It’s also a badminton in play between the Odd Couple of Spirituality, and one lovely read.” Tad Wise, author of Blessings in the Wind and Circling the Sacred Mountain.
“As the clarity and candour of the writing draw us into this remarkable journey, we soon experience an inner landscape of two extraordinary hearts and minds. This is a wonderful book.” Joseph Goldstein, meditation teacher and author of The Emerging Western Buddhism

This beautifully illustrated book charts the life, works and legacy of one of the world's most beloved authors, offering a seasonal guide to Jane Austen's life through the objects that surrounded her, the personal letters and manuscripts that she created, and the events that shaped her life and understanding.
It is created by Jane Austen's House - the enchanting Hampshire cottage where her genius flourished, now a museum that attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year - and reveals highlights from the museum's collection.
Arranged over the course of a calendar year, from snowy scenes in January to festive recipes in December, specially commissioned photography of Austen's home and possessions are brought together with extracts from her books, reproductions of her letters, and stories of her life throughout the seasons. Highlights include affectionate letters to her sister Cassandra, the story of the publication of the first edition of Pride and Prejudice, and the 'topaze crosses' that inspired Mansfield Park.
