~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
"Sorry for making you wait!" comes Emily's voice.
"It's no problem!" Nicolas calls back to his 18-year old daughter. "Take your time!"
He's waiting in her bedroom for her to come back out. She wanted to model some new clothes for him, and while he appreciates her wanting his input on it all, at the same time he's wondering just how long this is going to take.
Emily comes out and into the room where Nicolas lets out a low whistle at the sight of his daughter. She turns on the spot for him, modeling herself off.
"What do you think?" she asks. "I want your honest opinion."
"I think you look great," Nicolas says to her, not lying in the slightest. "You look very pretty."
Emily smiles.
Emily begins to walk towards her daddy.
"So daddy, I was thinking…"
But what she was thinking is never said as Emily trips at that moment, almost falling on her face. Luckily Nicolas's reflexes are quick and he catches her before she can hit the ground. He lifts her back up with ease. She's shaking as she stands upright.
"Wow," she says. "Thank you."
"Of course," Nicolas says, looking at her.
Nicolas feels disappointed in himself. Looking at his daughter just now, thinking about her…he can't sexualize her like how he's been doing. It's wrong. It's insulting to her. She's not like that—at least, he's pretty sure she's not. And she probably wouldn't appreciate knowing that her daddy has had to jerk off to the thought of her before.
Yep, it's got to stop here, and that's all there is to that.
"Hey honey," Nicolas says to his daughter, and Emily smiles up at him.
"Yeah, daddy?" she asks.
"I don't know if I told you this recently, but…you really look great," he says. Emily's smile brightens and he sees her blush.
"Thank you, daddy," she says, looking up into his eyes. He smiles back, looking down into hers.
    “A fiendishly efficient, gorgeously written, nasty little thrill ride of a psychological thriller. I couldn’t put it down, and it’s entirely possible that I’ll never sleep again. A true tour-de-force of a debut novel.”—Lyndsay Faye, author of The Gods of Gotham and Jane Steele For fans of Shirley Jackson, Sarah Waters and Daphne du Maurier, an electrifying debut about a boy left alone in his family’s English estate with a housekeeper he suspects has murdered his mother Nine-year-old Samuel lives alone in a once-great estate in Surrey with the family’s housekeeper, Ruth. His father is dead and his mother has been abroad for months, purportedly tending to her late husband’s faltering business. She left in a hurry one night while Samuel was sleeping and did not say goodbye.Beyond her sporadic postcards, Samuel hears nothing from his mother. He misses her dearly and maps her journey in an atlas he finds in her study. Samuel’s life is otherwise regulated by Ruth, who runs the house with an iron fist. Only she and Samuel know how brutally she enforces order.As rumors in town begin to swirl, Samuel wonders whether something more sinister is afoot. Perhaps his mother did not leave but was murdered—by Ruth.Artful, haunting and hurtling toward a psychological showdown, The Boy at the Keyhole is an incandescent debut about the precarious dance between truth and perception, and the shocking acts that occur behind closed doors.
