Beschreibung

Imperial Uprisings explores the internal rebellions that have challenged and reshaped empires throughout history, examining why seemingly invincible empires crumble from within. It investigates the motivations of rebel leaders, the strategies they employed, and the lasting impact these uprisings had on global power dynamics. The book highlights that resistance movements, even when unsuccessful in their immediate goals, expose inherent weaknesses in imperial structures, forcing adaptation or accelerating decline. For example, the book delves into uprisings like the Boxer Rebellion in China, the revolt of Spartacus against Rome, and the Maji Maji Rebellion in German East Africa, illustrating the recurring cycle of rebellion and repression. The book is structured to comprehensively analyze imperial uprisings. It begins by establishing a framework for understanding rebellions, then examines specific case studies, and synthesizes findings to identify common patterns. The book uses a comparative approach, drawing upon official records, rebel manifestos, and interdisciplinary perspectives to offer a nuanced understanding of the complex factors driving these uprisings. Ultimately, Imperial Uprisings provides a fresh perspective on the ongoing struggle for self-determination and the challenges of building a more just world, connecting historical struggles to contemporary anti-imperial movements.

Zen howl is the sound of our masks falling away, teaches Natalie Goldberg. When the masks we hide behind wither and die, there is immediate intimacy between ourselves and the world. This hint of intimacy of touching something out of reach is what ignites our longing to write and our desire to practice meditation.
On Zen Howl, the bestselling author of Writing Down the Bones (published in eight languages and more than 1,000,000 sold) joins Zen teacher Dosho Port to explore the natural (and sometimes unnatural) connections between writing and Zen.
Rich with teachings and exercises gathered by these two insightful teachers over the past 25 years, Zen Howl will show you how to drop your mask and witness in even the briefest moments of your life, a whole world waiting to be expressed.
You are invited to join Natalie Goldberg and Dosho Port to examine: • Resistance — using it to your advantage instead of letting it stop you • Clear intention, steadfastness, joy, and rest — four structures of Zen that can be assimilated into your writing practice • How to recognize "first thoughts" and gain the courage to express them, and much more

Here, Kant lays down the cornerstones of ethical behavior, propelled by the famous 'categorical imperative' that guides actions by universal maxims. This work delves into the nature of free will, the concept of duty, and the moral law within, presenting a compelling argument for autonomy and rationality in ethical decision-making. A foundational text, it is essential for understanding moral agency and integrity. Read in English, unabridged.

The invasion across the Channel came in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944. That day, forever known as D-Day, the Allies commenced Operation Overlord by staging the largest and most complex amphibious invasion in human history. The complex operation would require tightly coordinated naval and air bombardment, paratroopers, and even inflatable tanks that would be able to fire on fortifications from the coastline, all while landing over 150,000 men across nearly 70 miles of French beaches. Given the incredibly complex plan, it’s no surprise that General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the commander in charge of the operation, had already written a letter apologizing for the failure of the invasion, which he carried in his coat pocket throughout the day.
D-Day would turn out to be a remarkable success, but it wasn’t the first time the Allies tried to land in France after the Nazi conquest of Western Europe. On the 19th of August in 1942, Allied troops launched a raid on the port of Dieppe in German-occupied France, but this attack, codenamed Operation Jubilee, was a disaster. Of the 6,000 ground troops deployed, two-thirds were killed, captured, or wounded, and among the raid's objectives, only one could have been considered a success. Britain proved it was committed to a campaign to drive the Nazis out of Western Europe, but making that one point came at a huge cost in lives, most of them Canadian. Churchill later asserted, "My Impression of 'Jubilee' is that the results fully justified the heavy cost. Not surprisingly, the Canadians begged to differ.”
Churchill’s bombast aside, the raid on Dieppe proved quite painfully that an amphibious operation across the English Channel would be dangerous no matter when or how it was attempted, so the logistics for Operation Overlord would also rely on espionage, counter-intelligence, and deception.
