  Unlike contemporary 19th century erotic texts, such as The Pearl, whose sole object was to titillate, Walter’s interest in his subjects did not end with the extinguishing of the carnal flame. His hunger to understand the circumstances and minds of the women he encountered is never upstaged by the sex. Their potted life histories, their most intimate desires and acts were shared with him and in turn meticulously recorded by him, written down verbatim while still fresh in his mind.
  
  The resulting poignant record of a lost era and the intimate moments of the women who inhabited it offer us a remarkable insight into the 19th century that cannot be gleaned from any other source.

  Joan of Arc was born around January 6, 1412, in the small village of Domrémy, located in northeastern France. She came from a modest family of farmers, with her father, Jacques d’Arc, being a well-respected member of the community. Her mother, Isabelle Romée, was known for her devout religious beliefs, which would greatly influence Joan's early life. Joan was one of five children, and although she lived in relative poverty, her family provided her with a stable and loving environment. 
  Growing up in Domrémy, Joan was surrounded by the rural landscape of Lorraine, a region that was politically unstable at the time. The Hundred Years’ War, which pitted France against England, had caused widespread hardship for many French families. Domrémy, being on the border of French and Burgundian territories, was caught in the middle of this conflict. Joan witnessed firsthand the suffering of the French people, including raids and the destruction of villages, which left a lasting impact on her. 
  Joan was a deeply religious child, often spending time in the local church. It is said that she learned about the lives of saints and felt a special connection to them. Her strong faith became a central part of her identity. By the age of 13, Joan began to experience mystical visions. These visions, which she later described as coming from saints such as Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, were significant in shaping her future. The voices instructed her to help the French crown, specifically to assist Charles VII, the Dauphin, in reclaiming his throne and driving out the English forces from France. Joan took these visions seriously, believing they were divine instructions, and they set her on a path that would change the course of history.

  Vice Admiral Sir Peter Gretton's book is a brilliant account of his career in the navy through World War Two: fighting in the Second Battle of the Narvik and guarding convoys in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, before being placed in charge of Escort Group B7, which he described as "the finest job in the Navy for a new commander." It was in this role that Gretton, and the seven warships under his command, were able to make their contribution to turning the tide against the U-boat threat. 
   
   
   
  On April 22, 1943, Gretton was in charge of the escort for Convoy ONS 5 during its journey across the North Atlantic. Over the course of the voyage they were attacked by over fifty U-boats, and although they lost thirteen ships they managed to sink six U-boats and seriously damage many more. The U-boats had never faced such fierce resistance to their lethal raids. What tactics had Gretton used to fend off Doenitz's terrifying submarine wolf packs?   Convoy Escort Commander demonstrates how Allied commanders searched for new methods to repel U-boat assaults, including using direction-finding radio and radar, employing special tactical formations, coordinating with air cover, and endeavoring to keep the convoy together and prevent straggling.
