Copyright is everywhere. Your smartphone incorporates thousands of items of intellectual property. Someone owns the reproduction rights to photographs of your dining table. At this very moment, battles are raging over copyright in the output of artificial intelligence programs. Not only books but wallpaper, computer programs, pop songs, cartoon characters, snapshots, and cuddly toys are now deemed to be intellectual properties—making copyright a labyrinthine construction of laws with colorful and often baffling rationales covering almost all products of human creativity.

It wasn't always so. Copyright has its roots in eighteenth-century London, where it was first established to limit printers' control of books. But a handful of little-noticed changes in the late twentieth century brought about a new enclosure of the cultural commons, concentrating ownership of immaterial goods in very few hands. Copyright's metastasis can't be understood without knowing its backstory, a long tangle of high ideals, low greed, opportunism, and word-mangling that allowed poems and novels (and now, even ringtones and databases) to be treated as if they were no different from farms and houses. Principled arguments against copyright arose from the start and nearly abolished it in the nineteenth century. Nonetheless, countless revisions have made copyright ever stronger.

No Scrap Left Behind - My Life...

Teralyn Pilgrim had no idea the environmental and economic impact of food waste, or that she could save $100 a month by being waste free. But when a story of hungry children fills her with unbearable guilt, she decided to make a change to the way her family approached mealtime. Despite finicky kids and a skeptical husband, Pilgrim turned her feelings of guilt into action and created a zero-food waste kitchen.

Pilgrim began her journey by defining food waste with Rule #1: the Hungry Kid Test—would you throw something edible away with a hungry child watching? If the answer is yes, it can go in the compost. If the answer is no, then it's time to get creative.

Narrating her trials and errors—emphasis on errors—Pilgrim invites listeners to her table, where leftover food is a personal challenge to reduce waste, save money, and guard against squandering natural resources. Things get tricky when she discovers a five-year-old fish in her freezer, accidentally buys the grossest fat-free cookies in the world, and finds her dog is as picky as the kids. Addressing myths about how being waste-free is too hard (it's not) and whether expiration dates mean anything (they don't), Pilgrim teaches listeners clever ways to be resourceful while also offering a broader look at why food waste matters and the global effects of this massive problem.

    World’s Deadliest Destinations -...

The world is full of places that, for various reasons, have earned a reputation as deadly destinations. From war zones to natural disasters, some locations are marked by extreme danger, making them almost inhospitable for those who venture too close. This chapter aims to explore the factors that contribute to these perilous places, offering a broader understanding of what makes a destination deadly.

At the core of every dangerous place is a unique combination of environmental, political, and social factors that amplify the risks for those who live or travel there. Conflict zones, for instance, are often marked by violence, political instability, and lawlessness, creating environments where human life is under constant threat. In these regions, wars, civil unrest, and insurgent groups create an atmosphere of chaos where survival can be a daily struggle.

Natural disasters also play a significant role in shaping the deadliest destinations. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions are just a few of the catastrophic events that turn once-thriving areas into desolate wastelands. These natural phenomena strike without warning, leaving little time for escape and often causing widespread devastation.

But the threats are not always as immediate or obvious as bombs or floods. Some of the deadliest destinations are places where hidden dangers lurk beneath the surface. Toxic landscapes, such as the irradiated zones of Chernobyl, remain dangerous long after the initial disaster has passed. Similarly, remote wilderness areas, such as the jungles of the Amazon or the frozen tundra of Antarctica, may seem tranquil on the surface, but they can be life-threatening to those who are ill-prepared for the extreme conditions.
