Sinossi

Rudyard Kipling's "Ultimate Collection (Illustrated)" is a comprehensive anthology encapsulating the author's diverse literary output, ranging from poignant short stories to epic poetry. This collection is vividly illustrated, enhancing the rich tapestry of Kipling's vividly drawn worlds. It reflects his literary style, characterized by a masterful use of language, rhythmic prose, and deep exploration of themes such as imperialism, colonialism, and human nature, set against the backdrop of the British Empire during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each work invites readers into a realm where the exoticism of far-off lands collides with intricate moral dilemmas, promising insights into both the grandeur and the pitfalls of civilization. Rudyard Kipling, a product of the British colonial experience, lived in India during his childhood, a formative phase that instilled in him an appreciation for diverse cultures and a profound understanding of colonial dynamics. His experiences led him to pen stories that encapsulate both the allure and the challenges of colonial life. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907, Kipling's work resonates deeply with the complexities of his time, offering a distinctive voice that has continued to inspire generations. This collection is an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and anyone with an appreciation for classic literature. It invites readers to explore timeless themes through a rich lens, making it both a nostalgic trip into the past and a relevant commentary for today's readers. Whether you're familiar with Kipling's works or new to his style, this illustrated edition is sure to engage and provoke thought.

A medieval historian examines what we really know about the man who was "Merlin the Magician" and his impact on Britain.

The historical Merlin was no rough magician: he was a learned figure from the cutting edge of medieval science and adept in astrology, cosmology, prophecy, and natural magic, as well as being a seer and a proto-alchemist. His powers were convincingly real—and useful, for they helped to add credibility to the "long-lost" history of Britain which first revealed them to a European public. Merlin's prophecies reassuringly foretold Britain's path, establishing an ancient ancestral line and linking biblical prophecy with more recent times. Merlin helped to put British history into world history.

Anne Lawrence-Mathers also explores the meaning of Merlin's magic across the centuries, arguing that he embodied ancient Christian and pagan magical traditions, recreated for a medieval court and shaped to fit a new moral framework. Linking Merlin's reality and power with the culture of the Middle Ages, this remarkable book reveals the true impact of the most famous magician of all time.

Leo Tolstoy was born in 1828 in the Russian province of Tula to a wealthy noble family. As a child, he had private tutors but he showed little interest in any formal education. When he went to the University of Kazan in 1843 to study oriental languages and law, he left without completing his courses. Life now was relaxed and idle but with some writing also taking place. Gambling debts forced an abrupt change of path and he joined the army to fight in the Crimean War. He was commended for his bravery and promoted but was appalled at the brutality and loss of life. He recorded these and other earlier experiences in his diaries which formed the basis of several of his works.
In 1852 ‘Childhood’ was published to immediate success and was followed by ‘Boyhood’ and ‘Youth’.
His experience in the army and the horrors he witnessed resulted in ‘The Cossacks’ in 1862 and the trilogy ‘Sevastopol Tales’. After the war he travelled around Europe, visiting London and Paris and meeting such luminaries as Victor Hugo and Charles Darwin.
It was now that Tolstoy began his masterpiece, ‘War and Peace’. Published in 1869 it was an epic work that changed literature. He quickly followed this with ‘Anna Karenina’.
These successes made Tolstoy rich and helped him accomplish many of his dreams but also brought problems as he grappled with his faith and the lot of the oppressed poor. These revolutionary views became so popular that the authorities now kept him under surveillance.
He led a life of asceticism and vegetarianism and put his socialist ideals into practice by establishing numerous schools for the poor and food programmes. He also believed in giving away his wealth, which caused much discord with his wife.
His writing continued to bring forth classics such as ‘The Death of Ivan Ilyich’ and many brilliant and incisive short stories such as ‘How Much Land Does A Man Need’.
In 1901 Tolstoy was excommunicated from the Church and controversially deselected for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Whilst undertaking a pilgrimage by train in October 1910 with his daughter Aleksandra he caught pneumonia in the nearby town of Astapovo. Leo Tolstoy died on November 9th, 1910, he was 82.
