Sinossi

In "Then and Now; or, Thirty-Six Years in the Rockies," Robert Vaughn presents a richly detailed memoir that chronicles his transformative experiences in the American Rockies over the course of nearly four decades. The narrative intertwines personal anecdotes with historical insights, capturing not only the stunning natural landscapes but also the socio-cultural evolution of the region. Vaughn employs a lyrical yet straightforward literary style that serves to immerse readers in both the magnificent vistas and the trials of pioneer life, striking a balance between romanticism and realism that reflects the quintessential American frontier spirit. Robert Vaughn, a seasoned explorer and writer, drew upon his extensive background in the region to craft this evocative memoir. Born and raised in the pervasive wilderness of the Rockies, Vaughn's deep reverence for nature and his commitment to documenting its changes offer a poignant juxtaposition to the encroaching modernity he witnessed. His firsthand experiences lend authenticity to the work, making it a significant document of environmental and cultural history. Readers seeking to understand the multifaceted relationship between humans and nature in the American West will find Vaughn's memoir both enlightening and stirring. In Frontline Bodies, Nicolas Martin-Breteau argues that sports are not—and have never been—purely about entertainment for Black Americans. Instead, beginning in the 1890s during Reconstruction, Black Americans proactively used athletics as a tactic to fight racial oppression.

Martin-Breteau considers the work of Edwin B. Henderson, a prominent Black physical educator, civil rights activist, and historian of Black sports. Training Black children as athletes, Henderson felt, would work both to fortify racial pride and to dismantle racial prejudices—two necessary requirements for a successful political liberation struggle. In this way, physical education became political education.

By the end of the twentieth century, Martin-Breteau argues, racial uplift through sports had lost its emancipating power. The emphasis on the accumulation of wealth for professional athletes, as well as sports' ability to reinforce anti-Black stereotypes, had become a political problem for true collective liberation. For a marginalized group of people that has been physically excluded from the democratic process, however, sports remain a political resource. By studying the relationship between athletics and politics, Frontline Bodies renews the history of minority bodies and their power of action.

This is a book with 4 different topics, all related to the history of Great Britain. The topics are the following:
Topic 1: Horatio Nelson can be seen as one of the most courageous, strategic, valiant British generals in history. His tactics in the navy have led their empire to glorious victories in the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. During the wars against Napoleon, the Scandinavians, and in the West Indies, he was an exemplary leader, strategists, and combatant.
Topic 2: The Cathars were different from the mainstream Catholic church in the 13th century. They openly rebelled against some of the hypocritical behavior by priests and leaders, and they established their own deviant beliefs according to the best ability of their conscience.
Topic 3: From about 1858 to 1947, the British ruled over India. The raj carried out orders and came up with them. There was public mistrust and dissatisfaction about their regime, which led to protests, riots, and controversial events. India was a big part of the British Empire for a long time, until the country gained its independence. Other issues happened with the Bangladeshi and the Pakistani.
Topic 4: The Great Fire of London was a massive fire in the ominous year of 1666, which destroyed the homes of more than 80% of the city’s inhabitants, which was around 80,000 people back then. You will also learn about how the city was built up, how other competing countries saw the fire as a good thing, and how Christopher Wren helped rebuild churches and houses when it was all over. Something else was even more disturbing at this time: The Great Plague of London, a horrible scourge which is believed to have killed more than 100,000 people, struck with ills from rats and a lack of hygiene, around the same time.
