Sinopse

First published in 1889 and co-written with Lloyd Osbourne, The Wrong Box is a brilliantly dark comedy that blends farce, satire, and mystery into one of Robert Louis Stevenson's most entertaining and unconventional novels.

The story revolves around a peculiar tontine—an old-fashioned financial agreement in which the last surviving participant inherits the entire fortune. As the members of the tontine grow older and fewer, the value of survival becomes dangerously high. When one of the remaining heirs is believed to have died in a railway accident, a simple case of mistaken identity sets off a chain reaction of deception, greed, and absurd behavior.

At the center of the chaos is a misdirected shipping crate—the "wrong box"—containing a body that no one wants to claim and everyone wants to hide. As the box passes from place to place, it drags an increasingly tangled web of lies, impersonations, and moral compromises behind it. Each character, desperate to protect their financial interests or personal reputation, makes choices that only deepen the confusion.

With sharp wit and biting social commentary, Stevenson skewers Victorian respectability, exposing the hypocrisy and selfishness that lurk beneath polite society. The novel's brisk pace, clever dialogue, and outrageous situations make it a delightful contrast to Stevenson's more serious adventure tales, revealing his talent for humor and satire.

The Wrong Box is a masterful comedy of errors that explores the darker side of human nature through laughter. Filled with eccentric characters and unexpected twists, it remains a timeless classic for readers who enjoy witty mysteries, satirical fiction demonstrates how greed and self-interest can turn even the most respectable individuals into agents of chaos.

There are moments in life when one finds oneself unexpectedly surrounded. Young Bingo would describe it as fate. Others might use stronger language.
In Clustering Round Young Bingo, P. G. Wodehouse gathers the usual elements of civilized disaster: romantic enthusiasm, social overreaction, and the looming shadow of Aunt Dahlia's magazine enterprise.
Bingo, whose emotional decisions tend to arrive faster than his reasoning, becomes the centre of an intricate social arrangement involving a highly questionable article and a domestic crisis that even the finest French chef cannot resolve.
What emerges is a finely balanced mechanism: affection expressed as confusion, and dignity maintained only through collective effort and selective amnesia. Elegant, chaotic, and impeccably pointless in the most entertaining way.

The mysterious and forbidden Necronomicon is a cursed writing of arcane knowledge, forbidden magic and knowledge of dangerous things whose reading provokes madness and death itself. In addition, the book itself has a record of forgotten phrases and incantations that allow contact with beings of inconceivable power, but at the same time it entails an unimaginably horrifying danger to mention them. In short, it is the blasphemy of life.

It seemed to be a rumor, but one of the few surviving editions was discovered in 1845 in the desert near Babylon in the caves of Larbit where a remnant of King Ashurbanipal's descendants had been buried.

The Necronomicon was written in the ancient city of Damascus by the Arab poet Abdul Al-Hazred according to dates between 730 AD, and it is rumored that he died dismembered and his bones broken into a thousand pieces by an unknown being.
Like all those who came in contact with the blasphemies and curses of this noxious book suffered similar fates; mysterious deaths of a cruel and indescribable horror.

If you are of a curious spirit, I advise you for your own sake; that you dare not read this book, for if you should do so, only one thing I can tell you as a consolation and assurance: "That death you will never meet it before the horror that awaits you..."

Salomé, the haunting one-act tragedy that marks Wilde's first great success in the theatre, retells the Biblical story in which the stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas demands the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter as a reward for her dancing for her stepfather's amusement. Written in 1891, and prepared for its first run in 1892, rehearsals of Salomé had to be cancelled when the play was banned by the Lord Chamberlain due to its depiction of religious characters.
Undaunted, Wilde moved on to the drawing-room and society comedies he is today best known for, wowing London audiences with Lady Windermere's Fan and A Woman of No Importance, and it was only in 1894 that Salomé saw the light of day in an English translation, with a series of specially commissioned illustrations by the up-and-coming Aubrey Beardsley.

Virgil’s Eclogues (also known as Bucolics) is a collection of ten pastoral poems that idealize rural life in the Italian countryside. Written in the tradition of Greek bucolic poetry, particularly inspired by Theocritus, the Eclogues depict shepherds singing, competing in poetic contests, and lamenting lost love and displacement. Set against the backdrop of civil unrest and land confiscations in 1st-century BCE Rome, the poems blend idyllic imagery with subtle political commentary. Figures of hope, such as the prophesied birth of a divine child in the Fourth Eclogue, reflect contemporary longing for peace and renewal. Through lush language and elegant form, Virgil explores themes of love, loss, nature’s beauty, and the contrast between urban turmoil and rural harmony. The Eclogues established the pastoral tradition in Western literature, influencing poets for centuries with their lyrical grace and emotional depth.
