Sinossi

Grace is finally shed of her cheating husband and already enjoying the fine athletic body of her neighbor's college-age son. ~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~

Stepping to the glass door, he marveled at the magnificent orange tree that grew inside. The solarium had to be thirty-five feet tall and wide and the tree took up most of it without looking cramped, due to judicious pruning. It was surrounded by a variety of tropical flowers. Three hibiscus bushes, each in a different shade. Orchids and canna and birds of paradise made the room mad with color.

“It’s a Clementine.” A woman’s voice spoke a moment before he felt a hand brush across his naked ass. Rick started and looked to his right. Anna opened the curtain further and stood beside him, gazing into the solarium. His eyes slid over her lean, naked body. “Which is technically an orange and tangerine hybrid.”

She glanced at the young man, admiring his lean, athletic physique. “My husband, Kenneth, planted it back in the eighties.” She looked up at the tall young man and smiled. “Sadly though, I believe it is coming to the end of its life span.” She pointed with her delicate finger. “You can see some rot there about ten feet up, beneath the blushing trumpet vine.”

Rick looked up and spotted the area she was pointing to, beneath the fleshy pink flowers and nodded.

“Though she gives us great fruit, I will miss the trumpet vine the most.”

Confused, he looked more closely at the vine. It looked like a common enough tropical vine, with fine trumpet flowers that were just beginning to open. “Can’t you, you know, transplant it?”

The lovely older woman gave him a sad smile and shook her head. “Unfortunately, no. The tree and vine have a symbiotic relationship. When the tree dies, so will the vine.”

“But why will you miss it so much? There are a dozen things in that room prettier than it is.” He turned to Anna, genuinely curious. This segue had been enough of a distraction to ease up his wildly pounding heart, for which he was grateful.

She gave him a mischievous smile and ran her hand over his chest. Anna looked at his young, handsome face and ran the edge of her thumb over his nipple. She could definitely understand Grace’s attraction to the young man. She leaned in and whispered conspiratorially, “Because the vine emits a pheromone that is a mild aphrodisiac.”

Rick looked at her dubiously, and Anna snickered. “It’s true. My husband brought it home from the Amazon shortly after this tree was planted. He was there as part of an oil exploratory effort. He noticed an area where the local wildlife seemed unusually active and fruitful. Kenneth asked the local tribesmen about it, and they said it was because of the vine. They also told him something else that he did not believe at the time. They didn’t find any oil, but he brought home a potted seedling.”

“What didn’t he believe?” Rick asked.

She stepped back and turned to walk away. She stopped and looked back over her shoulder. “They told him that the one night a year when the trumpets bloom, the scent of the flowers will drive any female animal nearby out of her mind with lust.”

Rick glanced back at the pink flowers. “But they are nearly open now!”

Anna gave the young man a seductive smile. “So they are,” she purred, then turned and walked off toward the kitchen.

From the Booker–shortlisted author of Umbrella, a world-girdling collection of writings inspired by a life lived in and for literature

From one of the most unusual and distinctive writers working today, Will Self’s Why Read is a cornucopia of thoughtful and brilliantly witty essays on writing and literature.

Self takes us with him: from the foibles of his typewriter repairman to the irradiated exclusion zone of Chernobyl, to the Australian outback, and to literary forms past and future. With his characteristic intellectual brio, Self aims his inimitable eye at titans of literature like Woolf, Kafka, Orwell, and Conrad. He
writes movingly on W. G. Sebald’s childhood in Germany and provocatively describes the elevation of William S. Burroughs’s Junky from shocking pulp novel to beloved cult classic. Self also expands on his regular column in Literary Hub to ask readers how, what, and ultimately why we should read in an
ever-changing world. Whether he is writing on the rise of the bookshelf as an item of furniture in the nineteenth century or on the impossibility of Googling his own name in a world lived online, Self’s trademark intoxicating prose and mordant, energetic humor infuse every piece.

A book that examines how the human stream of consciousness flows into and out of literature, Why Read will satisfy both old and new readers of this icon of contemporary literature.

Written in 731 AD, The Ecclesiastical History of the English People is a foundational chronicle by the monk Bede, detailing the history of Christianity in England from the Roman period to the early 8th century. Covering the arrival of St. Augustine, the spread of the faith, and the struggles between rival Christian traditions, Bede blends fact, hagiography, and theological reflection into a cohesive narrative. He highlights key figures like St. Cuthbert and Queen Ethelburga, while emphasizing divine providence in shaping England’s spiritual destiny. Though shaped by its author’s monastic perspective, the work remains an essential source for understanding early medieval Britain, the development of the English Church, and the cultural foundations of English identity.

The history of Germany and the German-speaking peoples is as complex and multifaceted as any in Europe. It is also one of the most difficult to pinpoint conceptually and historically, since every nation is a construct to some extent. Language is certainly important, and the German language is a unifying factor for any notion of a unified Germany, yet even today, many German-speakers live outside the borders of modern Germany. Shared customs and traditions gave Germans a common sense of identity to some extent, but these were often local in origin. Germans were also split between several versions of Christianity.
Nevertheless, ideas of a German nation were present by the 19th century, leading up to the official unification in 1871. Neil MacGregor, a historian of modern Germany, has explained that the two defining events leading to the rise of German nationalism and the movement toward unification were the Thirty Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars. During the Thirty Years' War, more than 200 German states were part of the Holy Roman Empire's loose confederation, and that war was predominantly fought in German states by foreign powers, including France, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and the Netherlands. MacGregor noted that “horrors were experienced across all Germany, and were never forgotten,” to the extent that they were invoked during World War II. The religious basis of the Thirty Years’ War saw the split between Catholicism and Protestantism, which was at the heart of the Reformation. Some foreign leaders even invoked defending "German freedoms" for their invasion.
From the German point of view, the Thirty Years' War was proof of their vulnerability to foreign aggression. Atrocities such as the "sacking" of Magdeburg in 1631, where more than 30,000 people were killed, were embedded in the German consciousness. All told, 8 million people died during the Thirty Years’ War.

This book consists of two titles, which are about the following topics:
1 - The term "mind control" is often used in various contexts, but it broadly refers to different methods of influencing or taking control of the mind. The critical question is: whose mind is being controlled?
There are several methods of mind control, each stemming from different disciplines. Techniques for controlling others' minds are distinct from those used to influence one's own mind, which is why various types of mind control exist.
For those looking to change and influence the thoughts of others, learning hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is essential. While NLP primarily focuses on personal development, it provides insight into the personality traits of those you wish to influence.
For example, a common NLP technique involves covert or conversational hypnosis, where an individual subtly implants thoughts while engaging in seemingly normal conversation. Over time, the recipient may believe these ideas originated from their own thoughts, even though they were subtly guided by the influencer.
2 - Remorse, regret, and saying "I'm sorry" are crucial for effective and balanced social interactions. These concepts, when practiced, increase the chances of successful relationships. Ignoring or rejecting these elements can lead to criminal or deviant behavior, with victimization often being a central aspect. The phrase "I'm sorry" is one of the most powerful and complex expressions in communication.
Throughout history, the phrase "I'm sorry" has been a fundamental part of societal and cultural exchanges across various languages. Its significance lies in acknowledging human fallibility, as our actions or words can cause temporary anger or lasting psychological harm. Understanding the origins and meanings of "I'm sorry" can deepen one's appreciation of this important expression.
