Sinossi

Useless Inventions Explained explores the captivating history of technological missteps—inventions that, despite good intentions, never quite found their purpose. It's a journey into the world of innovation history where failure offers just as much insight as success. The book highlights how seemingly brilliant ideas can falter due to a lack of market need, technological limitations, or flawed concepts. Consider, for example, the elaborate Victorian gadgets designed to automate simple household tasks, or early personal transportation attempts that proved utterly impractical.

The book uniquely approaches its topic by categorizing these inventions thematically, examining those that lacked market acceptance, those limited by technology, and those conceptually flawed from the start. It emphasizes that these "useless" inventions, while impractical, serve as crucial learning experiences, pushing boundaries and paving the way for future breakthroughs. By drawing on historical records, patent filings, and even anecdotal accounts, the book paints a vivid picture of each creation's journey.

The book progresses from defining "practical uselessness" to exploring specific categories of inventions across thematic chapters. These chapters cover everything from Victorian gadgets to war contraptions, ultimately leading to an exploration of the implications for modern inventors and risk-takers. By understanding why these inventions failed, readers gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of technological progress and the importance of learning from both successes and failures.

The ballad "John Henry" is the most recorded folk song in American history and John Henry--the mighty railroad man who could blast through rock faster than a steam drill--is a towering figure in our culture.
In Steel Drivin' Man, Scott Reynolds Nelson recounts the true story of the man behind the iconic American hero, telling the poignant tale of a young Virginia convict who died working on one of the most dangerous enterprises of the time, the first rail route through the Appalachian Mountains. Using census data, penitentiary reports, and railroad company reports, Nelson reveals how John Henry, victimized by Virginia's notorious Black Codes, was shipped to the infamous Richmond Penitentiary to become prisoner number 497, and was forced to labor on the mile-long Lewis Tunnel for the C&O railroad. Equally important, Nelson masterfully captures the life of the ballad of John Henry, tracing the song's evolution from the first printed score by blues legend W. C. Handy, to Carl Sandburg's use of the ballad to become the first "folk singer," to the upbeat version by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
Attractively illustrated with numerous images, Steel Drivin' Man offers a marvelous portrait of a beloved folk song--and a true American legend.

Do you have a special needs child or know someone who is? Room at the Table: Encouraging Stories from Special Needs Families is rooted in the 2 Samuel 9 account of King David, who extended kindness to Jonathon's disabled son, Mephibosheth, and granted him a seat at the king's table.
Author Stephanie Pavlantos, the mother of Matthew with cerebral palsy and Starr Ayers, the mother of Ashley with Down syndrome, co-authored the collection of real-life experiences from families, guardians, caregivers, and individuals with special needs. These stories of hardship, courage, and blessings will encourage, enlighten, and equip readers for ministry in their communities. Room at the Table also contains a light-hearted look at life through the eyes of these extraordinary individuals.
Stephanie and Starr's vision is to increase awareness of the impact of mental and physical disabilities on families and caregivers. They aspire to promote understanding, diminish fears, and provide suggestions for ways people who know and love special needs individuals and families can minister to them.
Those with special needs are compassionate individuals who love freely and desire love in return. There is no need to fear them or allow their disabilities to intimidate you. As people made in God's image, their wants and needs are the same as yours and mine.
We are all children of God with special needs. Only Jesus knows the battles we have fought and won or lost, or the ones we are still fighting. When life or insensitive people hurt, wound, or leave us bitter, Jesus is the One who heals, loves, and restores us.
Room at the Table: Encouraging Stories from Special Needs Families will inspire and instill in you a greater desire to show the kindness of God to "one of the least of these." (Matthew 25:40 NIV). Whether you shed tears or laugh out loud, these stories will touch your heart.

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer whose remarkable journeys cemented his place among the most important figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton's story is one of daring, leadership, and resilience, traits that made him a legendary figure in the annals of exploration.
Born in Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, on February 15, 1874, Shackleton moved to Sydenham, south London, at the age of ten with his Anglo-Irish family. His early life was marked by a sense of adventure that would shape his future endeavors. Shackleton's first significant exposure to the polar regions came in 1901 when he joined Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition as a third officer. Although Shackleton’s time on the expedition was cut short due to health concerns, he had already proven his determination by marching to a new southern record of latitude 82°S, alongside Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson. Despite being sent home early, Shackleton had tasted the allure of the polar regions and was eager for more.
The opportunity came in 1907 when Shackleton led the Nimrod expedition to Antarctica. During this journey, he and three companions ventured farther south than any explorer before them, reaching 88°S, just 97 geographical miles from the South Pole. This achievement was monumental, representing the greatest advancement toward the pole at the time. In addition to their groundbreaking southern march, the team also made history by summiting Mount Erebus, Antarctica’s most active volcano. Shackleton returned a hero and was knighted by King Edward VII for his daring exploits.

Trust is the cornerstone of human relationships, whether personal, professional, or societal. It is the belief that others will act with integrity, honor their commitments, and respect our boundaries. Trust provides a sense of security, allowing us to open ourselves up to others, share our vulnerabilities, and work collaboratively toward common goals. When trust is present, relationships thrive on mutual respect and understanding. However, when trust is violated, the very foundation of these relationships is shattered.
A trust violation occurs when someone breaks the confidence that has been placed in them. This breach can take many forms: from small betrayals like breaking a promise to major violations such as lying, cheating, or stealing. The consequences of a trust violation are profound, as they not only damage the relationship but also affect the individual’s emotional and psychological well-being. Trust violations often result in feelings of betrayal, hurt, confusion, and a loss of confidence in others. These emotional reactions can be difficult to overcome and may lead to long-lasting consequences.
In this book, we explore the different facets of trust violations, from their causes to their effects, as well as strategies for healing and rebuilding trust. Understanding the nature of trust violations is essential for recognizing how they affect us and those around us. By examining the psychological, emotional, and social consequences of betrayal, we can begin to understand the complexities of the experience and the challenges involved in overcoming it.
