Sinossi

In Smile, the author invites the reader into a quiet, honest journey through loss, doubt, ambition, and reflection. Drawing from personal experience and philosophical dialogue, he explores what remains when illusions fall away — when money reassures but does not fulfill, when love elevates but does not protect, and when life refuses to follow the plans we were taught to trust. This is a reflective narrative about meaning, resilience, and inner alignment — a meditation on how to live honestly in a world that constantly asks us to perform joy.Rivalson Appoleus is a reflective writer whose work explores meaning, resilience, and the inner life. Drawing from lived experience, displacement, and personal loss, his writing blends philosophical inquiry with narrative depth.Rather than offering advice, he invites readers to question the stories they have been told about happiness, success, and fulfillment. Smile is his exploration of what remains when certainty dissolves — and of the quiet strength that emerges in its place.

We, Western minds, have forgotten who we are, despite having never once stopped being who we are. We've lost touch with the impersonal, Daimonic forces that give us direction and the sacrificial nature of our existence. No longer do we realize that our lives aren't, have never been, and will never be about ourselves. Consequently, we've lost our ability to sense the immanent context that couches our lives in meaning and purpose. Our alienation from our own inborn nature and role has led to a tragic schism: a divorce between essence and narrative, being and action. This book is an effort to help heal this schism. It's about re-encountering our natural selves and guiding Daimon, retuning into the archetypal dispositions we embody, and relearning how to navigate the choppy waters of life in a spontaneous and fulfilling manner.

The world of contemplative Christianity has yielded to the same voices for far too long, many of whom are from centuries before our time, with lives unlike our own, and often from experiences disconnected from marginalization, oppression, and what it feels like to be an outsider.

Cassidy Hall, an LGBTQIA+ Christian contemplative scholar and podcast host, takes us on a journey to queer the contemplative tradition.

As queerness reawakened her own contemplative life, Hall discovered that queering and questioning the tradition allowed her to listen more closely to voices that are queer, marginalized, and oppressed. In showing us the way, she helps us envision what contemplative faith can look like, what spiritual spaces we can reclaim for welcome—and how queering contemplation, and lifting up queer contemplative voices, frees us to seek the infinite possibility of our own identity and engage our spiritual lives with open hearts and open hands.

Whether you're queer or want to queer your own perspectives, Hall throws open the doors of contemplative spirituality for all, bringing us to contemplation in very new, sometimes old, but always queer ways.

It is widely accepted that political discourse in recent years has become more openly racist and more accepting of wildly implausible conspiracy theories. Dogwhistles and Figleaves explores ways in which such changes—both of which defied previously settled norms of political speech—have been brought about. Jennifer Saul shows that two linguistic devices, dogwhistles and figleaves, have played a crucial role. Some dogwhistles (such as "88", used by Nazis online to mean "Heil Hitler") serve to disguise messages that would otherwise be rejected as unacceptable, allowing them to be transmitted surreptitiously. Other dogwhistles (like the 1988 "Willie Horton" ad) work by influencing people in ways that they are not aware of, and which they would likely reject were they aware. Figleaves (such as "just asking questions") take messages that could easily be recognized as unacceptable, and provide just enough cover that people become more willing to accept them. Saul argues that these devices are important for the spread of racist discourse. She also shows how they contribute to the transmission of norm-violating discourse more generally, focusing on the case of wildly implausible conspiracist speech. This book is the first full-length exploration of dogwhistles and figleaves. It offers an illuminating and disturbing view of the workings of contemporary political discourse.
