Sinossi

Great Barrier explores the captivating story of the Great Barrier Reef, a natural wonder visible from space. This book examines the reef's geological history, its profound connection to Indigenous Australians, and the urgent environmental challenges threatening its existence. Readers will discover how the reef's formation spans millennia and how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have interwoven their cultures with the reef for countless generations. Today, the reef faces unprecedented threats from climate change and pollution, demanding immediate action. This exploration integrates geological surveys, archaeological findings, and Indigenous oral histories, providing a comprehensive understanding of the reef's past and present.

The book uniquely balances scientific research with traditional ecological knowledge, offering a more holistic perspective than typically found in reef studies. For instance, understanding coral formation requires knowledge of specific geological conditions over millions of years.

The book unfolds in three distinct sections, progressing from the reef's geological origins to the cultural ties with Indigenous communities and culminating in an examination of the current environmental crisis. By integrating these diverse perspectives, Great Barrier argues that a comprehensive understanding is crucial for effective conservation, sustainable tourism, and global action on climate change.

How real is reality? Are our images of the world mere inventions or do they correspond to an external reality? Is it possible to know the truth?

These are some of the questions that are discussed in this book by physicist and philosopher Heinz von Foerster and media studies scholar Bernhard Poerksen. Together they explore the limits of our cognitive capacities; they debate the apparent objectivity of our sensual perception and the consequences of "truth terrorism"; and they talk about the relationship between knowledge and ethics, sight and insight.
    The authors:
Heinz von Foerster (1911–2002) completed his studies of physics in Vienna and worked at different research labs before emigrating to the United States in 1949. In 1957, at the University of Illinois, he established the Biological Computer Lab (BCL) – the cradle of the epistemology that would later cause a stir under the label of "constructivism." The focus was on analyzing the logical and methodological problems that in evitably arise when one seeks to know knowledge. He is the author of numerous books, including Understanding Understanding: Essays on Cybernetics and Cognition.
Bernhard Poerksen is professor of media studies at the University of Tübingen with a particular research interest in the new media age. His books about systemic thinking have been translated into many languages. In 2008 he was voted "Professor of the Year" in honor of his teaching. His most recent book publications in English include From Being to Doing: The Origins of the Biology of Cognition (with Humberto Maturana), The Unleashed Scandal: The End of Control in the Digital Age (with Hanne Detel), and Digital Fever: Taming the Big Business of Disinformation.

    Omnipotence is dead.
At least it should be. It has no biblical support. And it dies a death of a thousand qualifications in philosophy.
Those harmed and hurting wonder why an omnipotent and loving God doesn't prevent pointless pain. The problem of evil buries omnipotence six feet under.
But the death of omnipotence is not the death of God.
In this ground-breaking book, best-selling and award-winning author Thomas Jay Oord explains why omnipotence should be rejected. But Oord offers a replacement: amipotence, the power of love.
If we think love shapes and guides God's power, we make better sense of life. We make better sense of the Bible. Amipotence explains why God doesn't prevent genuine evil and it overcomes other obstacles to belief. An amipotent Spirit empowers all that is loving, true, beautiful, and good.
No book makes a bolder but more needed argument for why God is not all-powerful. Those who care about God, love, scripture, and logic will find what they've long been looking for.

    Endorsements:
"Omnipotence has long been considered a basic, non-negotiable, characteristic of God. But is it biblical? And does it push us toward theological landmines that blow up faith? In this book, Oord, with his typical gentle candor, lays out the complex issues in clear and readable chunks. In the end, Oord points to the beauty and comfort of a God who is uncontrolling love."
