Nana, in the endearing way of grandmothers, tells Sara of the importance of rice for their family and explains why her pa has to work so long and hard. Sara, reluctant at first, slowly begins to listen to the story and actually to participate in telling it. Together, they make a delicious, sweet rice pie, and, soon, the two are singing a song that spans the generations of their family. Now anyone can make sweet rice pie by following the recipe included in this book. The vivid artwork captures not only the story but the mood behind the story in its warm simplicity of style. Yet, each page utilizes an innovative story-telling mechanism. Atop of each page is a small band of illustration, with a gingham-framed picture at each end. While the main illustrations depict the action of the story, the top treatment serves to illustrate what the characters are thinking and talking about. The effect is to convey a wordless narrative that is woven seamlessly throughout the book, which raises the story to a completely different level. Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton is also the author of Why Cowboys Sleep with Their Boots On and Why Cowboys Need a Brand, both published by Pelican. She currently resides in Medina, Ohio. Joyce Haynes, a resident of Pineville, Missouri, has won numerous local, state, and national awards for her illustrations. Her illustrated books include Eyr the Hunter, When the Great Canoes Came, and A Good Soup Attracts Chairs, all published by Pelican.

From the author of So B. It—now a major motion picture. “A loveable character . . . Fans of Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid titles will be drawn to Oggie.” —School Library Journal

Oggie Cooder has a talent—he can charve better than anyone else in Truman Elementary School. (Charving, for the uninitiated, is the carving of a piece of cheese with one’s teeth.) Oggie doesn’t think this is anything special—but his whole school will soon be disagreeing with him. Because after he inadvertently charves during a nationwide hunt for unusual talents, his charving puts him on the path to fame and fortune. Suddenly, he’s the star of the school . . . but he’s not sure that he wants to shine that way.

This is Sarah Weeks at her best—funny, clever, and kid-friendly.

“Oggie’s adventure delivers a message about staying true to oneself, but the lesson is never cheesy; it is as light-hearted and tasty as Oggie’s charving lessons.” —Kidsreads.com

“What is refreshing is that Oggie doesn’t have to change his nature to change his social status. Gentle humor with a satisfying message for middle-grade readers.” —Kirkus Reviews

"Hey Diddle Diddle, the Cat and the Fiddle. The cow jumped over the moon! The little dog laughed to see such sport and the dish ran off with the spoon." Perhaps you think this verse is all nonsense, and that the things it mentions could never have happened; but they did happen, as you will understand when Frank Baum has explained them all to you clearly.
Little Bobby was the only son of a small farmer who lived out of town upon a country road. Bobby's mother looked after the house and Bobby's father took care of the farm, and Bobby himself, who was not very big, helped them both as much as he was able.
It was lonely upon the farm, especially when his father and mother were both busy at work, but the boy had one way to amuse himself that served to pass many an hour when he would not otherwise have known what to do. He was very fond of music, and his father one day brought him from the town a small fiddle, or violin, which he soon learned to play upon. I don't suppose he was a very fine musician, but the tunes he played pleased himself, as well as his father and mother, and Bobby's fiddle soon became his constant companion. To find out how the cow and the cat and the moon became involved, you will need to listen to this delightful talk and be much the wiser.
