Sinossi

"Union-Find Data Structures and Algorithms""Union-Find Data Structures and Algorithms" delivers a comprehensive exploration of the mathematical foundations, core implementations, and advanced techniques underpinning one of computer science’s most essential data structures. Seamlessly blending rigorous theoretical exposition with practical engineering insights, the book opens with foundational concepts in set theory, graph connectivity, and complexity analysis—equipping readers with the intellectual tools necessary to grasp the delicacy and depth of union-find. Key chapters unpack classical and amortized complexity, the role of the inverse Ackermann function, and the subtleties of formal data type abstractions, ensuring that readers build a solid baseline before engaging with more advanced material. The volume proceeds to a detailed survey of fundamental and optimized union-find implementations, tracing the evolution from array-based and linked-list structures to forest representations and persistent variants. It devotes special attention to algorithmic heuristics—including union by size, union by rank, and sophisticated path compression techniques—offering empirical benchmarks and comparative analyses that underscore both theoretical and real-world performance. Advanced sections tackle lower bounds, optimality proofs, and the challenges of dynamic updates, deletion, and parallelization, drawing clear connections to contemporary needs in distributed systems and high-performance computing.A hallmark of this text is its devotion to bridging theory with application. Through in-depth case studies, readers discover union-find’s pivotal role in minimizing spanning trees, processing large-scale graphs, enabling image segmentation, powering distributed consensus, and facilitating efficient clustering in data analysis and machine learning. The book concludes with forward-looking discussions on research frontiers, from quantum algorithms to privacy-aware and fault-tolerant systems, making it an indispensable reference for researchers, engineers, and students seeking a nuanced, authoritative treatment of union-find data structures in both classical and emerging domains.

Energy is vital for a good standard of living, and affordable sources of power that do not cause climate change or pollution are crucial. Renewable energy is recognized as providing the answer, with countries from around the world deciding at COP28 in 2023 to aim to triple the global renewable energy capacity by 2030, for the transition away from fossil fields to be on track for net-zero emissions by 2050.This Very Short Introduction describes the main sources of renewable energy—solar PV, wind, hydropower, and biomass—their innovative technologies, and what each could deliver. It also discusses the relatively small contributions expected from tidal, wave, geothermal, and nuclear power, and from carbon capture and storage. Electrification of buildings, industry, and transport for net-zero will roughly triple the supply of electricity, and this can be met predominantly by solar PV and wind power. The learning effect has resulted in a dramatic drop in the price of wind and solar PV power in the last decade, making them the cheapest generators of electricity in most parts of the world. The Very Short Introduction ends by discussing the actions needed that include strong consistent policies, financial initiatives to take advantage of the long-term benefits of renewables, and good community involvement.

The Jupiter Sun - The Greatest...

This book was inspired by my previous work of Science Fiction in: 'The Book To End All Books'. At the climactic conclusion of that book, I realized that we didn't have the 1,000 years I gave humankind to create a 2nd sun in the sky. We would be extinct by then and long buried in the debris of our own destruction.
So, I decided to put all the speculative knowledge that I had learned from my science fiction novel into use in this book in hopes that perhaps humanity would be wise enough to give it a try. We can do this. We can ignite Jupiter and create a 2nd sun. And, I also answer the question - Why would we do this?
Humanity has some major challenges to its continued existence that are caused by our technology. But now we have the opportunity to use our advanced space and rocket technology and our laser Fusion Reactor technology to combine them into a major project for the world to take on.
We can use our current knowledge of nuclear fusion and space travel to send a team to create a station on the four moons of Jupiter and shoot high energy red laser beams into the hydrogen core of Jupiter to ignite the gas giant into a 2nd sun in our sky. Don't worry - Jupiter is five times further away from us than our present sun, so it would not create any significant amounts of additional heat. It's also 1,000 times smaller than our 1st sun, so again, we have nothing to fear from increased heat. BUT, we would gain twice as much FREE AND SUSTAINABLE SOLAR ENERGY from another sun and this could be utilized by both the Earth and Mars to save our species.

The Reality of ESP - A...

On February 4, 1974, members of the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped nineteen-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, California, apartment. Desperate to find her, the police called physicist Russell Targ and Pat Price, a psychic retired police commissioner. As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, suddenly he pointed to one of them and announced, “That’s the ringleader.” The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed subsequently so identified. Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes. That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP. Another occurred when his group made $120,000 by forecasting for nine weeks in a row the changes in the silver-commodity futures market.

As a scientist, Targ demands proof. His experience is based on two decades of investigations at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), which he cofounded with physicist Harold Puthoff in 1972. This twenty-million-dollar program launched during the Cold War was supported by the CIA, NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and Army and Air Force Intelligence. The experiments they conducted routinely presented results that could have happened by chance less than once in a million. Targ describes four types of experiments: remote viewing, distant mental influence, whole-field isolation, and precognition and retrocausality. He also presents evidence for survival after death; explains how ESP works based on the Buddhist/Hindu view of ourselves as nonlocal, eternal awareness; discusses the ethics of exercising psychic abilities; and shows us how to explore ESP ourselves. “I am convinced,” Targ says, “that most people can learn to move from their ordinary mind to one not obstructed by conventional barriers of space and time. Who would not want to try that?”
