Sinossi

In "The Hills and the Vale," Richard Jefferies masterfully intertwines nature writing with a rich tapestry of poetic reflection. Set against the pastoral backdrop of the English countryside, this work captures the essence of rural life, exploring the interaction between humans and the natural world. Jefferies employs a lyrical prose style punctuated by vivid imagery and a profound reverence for the landscapes he describes. Rooted in the Romantic tradition, this collection reflects the period's burgeoning interest in the sublime beauty of the English countryside, offering readers a contemplative exploration of the hills, valleys, and the accompanying cycle of life. Richard Jefferies, a notable figure in Victorian literature, drew inspiration from his own experiences growing up in the idyllic Wiltshire countryside. His deep connection to nature and evocative writing style illuminate his keen observations of rural life, its struggles, and its beauty. The austerity of his surroundings often translates into profound philosophical insights, leading him to probe deeper into humanity's place within the natural order, making his work resonate with the zeitgeist of his time. This book is highly recommended for those who appreciate evocative nature writing and philosophical contemplation. Jefferies' reflections stimulate a timeless dialogue between the reader and nature, making "The Hills and the Vale" not just a descriptive landscape but a journey into the soul of the countryside itself.

John Davys Beresford was born on 17th March 1873. His life was blighted by infantile paralysis which left him partially disabled.
After an education at Oundle school he trained to be an architect. However, he quickly decided that his life was to be centred on a literary career. His first offerings were in drama and as a journalist.
As well as being a book reviewer for the Manchester Guardian he contributed to New Statesman, The Spectator, Westminster Gazette, and the Theosophist magazine The Aryan Path.
His spiritual journey in early adulthood had claimed him as an agnostic, in defiance of his clergyman father. This view he later abandoned in preference to describing himself as a Theosophist and a pacifist.
As well as many novels, many themed with spiritual and philosophical elements. Beresford was also a gifted short story writer particularly across the science-fiction, horror and ghost genres.
All of these elements helped him to obtain a prominent place in Edwardian Literary London.
John Davys Beresford died on the 2nd February 1947. He was 73.

There is light in the sharing of our stories.
"I began to realise that maybe things didn’t have to be this way. That maybe something can be done to turn things around. That perhaps miracles are attainable when faith and hope are shaped into crowns on our tiny brains. There were voices in me urging me to step out of my comfort zone to make that change. And I remember having an inclination — to not repeat the mistakes my parents made. For that’s their way of showing me what I should not be doing. But I didn’t know where to start. I didn’t know what I had to do to turn things around. I was clueless. But I gathered small steps would lead me to big ones and I asked myself what was the worst choice I had ever made in my life at that point. To my surprise, it didn’t take me long to figure this one out at all. It came to me like lightning itself. Striking, clear, and loud — it was my thoughts. My very negative thoughts."

The first wound for all of us who are classified as "black" is empire.

In Black and Female, Tsitsi Dangarembga examines the legacy of imperialism on her own life and on every aspect of black embodied African life. This paradigm-shifting essay collection weaves the personal and political in an illuminating exploration of race and gender. Dangarembga recounts a painful separation from her parents as a toddler, connecting this experience to the ruptures caused in Africa by human trafficking and enslavement. She argues that, after independence, the ruling party in Zimbabwe only performed inclusion for women while silencing the work of self-actualized feminists. She describes her struggles to realize her ambitions in theater, film, and literature, laying out the long path to the publication of her novels.

At once philosophical, intimate, and urgent, Black and Female is a powerful testimony of the pervasive and long-lasting effects of racism and patriarchy that provides an ultimately hopeful vision for change. Black feminists are "the status quo's worst nightmare." Dangarembga writes, "our conviction is deep, bolstered by a vivid imagination that reminds us that other realities are possible beyond the one that obtains."
